Name Change Should Occur Following Split Into Separate Companies

EchoStar Communications filed documents with the Securities and Exchange Commission Thursday to officially change its name to Dish Network Corp., a move that reflects its plans to split into two separate companies.

EchoStar announced in September its intention to split into two separate entities – one to hold its Dish Network satellite TV assets and the other, dubbed EchoStar Holding Corp., to hold its broadcast satellite receiver, antennae and commercial satellite lines of business and assets, which currently operate under the “EchoStar” name. EchoStar currently markets its satellite TV service under the “Dish Network” moniker. Sling Media, maker of the Slingbox, a device that allows subscribers to view cable and satellite programming away from their homes on their personal computers – also is expected to be included in EchoStar Holding.

Does this mean that we can finally lose the confusing and pointless D* and E* abbreviations, or will it now be D* and D*?

I don't think that would cause any confusion, but the fact that DNET could stand for both Dish Network and a Dysembryoplastic Neuroectodermal Tumor is just asking for trouble. :D

This is interesting in that Charlie wanted to change the corporate name a few years ago but the board of directors at the time advised against the change. Of course he could have done what he wanted, but listened to them and the name remained Echostar.

As for what to call it after the change, I really don't think we can decide this until we have gone through a couple dozen threads and received the unsolicited advice from a majority of the "other dbs service" customers. :D

D* and DN works for me ... although E* will always be "EchoStar/Dish Network" in my mind unless the new EchoStar Holdings goes into the retail DBS business.

DTV caused lots of confusion before and eventually D* was "generaly" agreed to.

Just call it Dish Network, or Dish. Call the other one DirectTV. This is the simplest way to describe the two companies.

DirecTV and Dish works for me. I always thought the abbreviations were kind of stupid. Not sure what the point is?

I'm wondering what to call the Echostar Knowledge Base since it will continue to follow both Dish Network and Echostar Holdings. :)

    See ya

At the moment E* and D* are unique identifiers. Once one learns the difference (which takes under a minute in my opinion) one can move past it and save a few characters every time the names need to be used. It's just shorthand.

BTW: I like the name of the EKB! Long may it live!

I'm not sure why people have to abbreviate so much anyway, especially with short names like DirecTV, Dish Network, and Echostar. There is a precedent in other walks of life where people abbreviate something for long enough, and eventually people forget what it was they were abbreviating.
