I know.. unfortunately that's a losing battle... but it's downright immoral to do this to us when we pay so much.. yadda yadda yadda. I'm not telling you something you don't know.

my western digital my book home edition hdd froze last night apparently, as I woke up and the reciever would not respond(maybe the reciever froze, but that has never happened on this reciever in the last year or so I've had it.) bottom line, when I rebooted, the external hdd was completely deleted and now all my shows are gone... so, I suppose I should take it back to best buy and start from scratch. any suggestions before I do that on sunday would be greatly appreciated.

guess I'm not so special after all...

ok so I guess it is back to the drawing board. now, I keep reading about getting an internal hdd and using the Antec MX-1 enclosure and that seems to be the concensus on the topic.

but exactly which internal hdd should I buy? people seem to vary on what works for them. like I said, I want at least 1, preferrably 1.5 tb. 2tb HDDs are just too much $$$ right now.

Also, my WD my book home edition did work great, but after I woke up to frozen receiver, I hit the reset button and when it loaded back up, it read the external hdd, but it had formatted the drive. if someone can provide me with a solution for that, I'm more than happy with the hdd and would just keep it. but if every single time I had to reset the receiver for updates, power outage, frozen screen, reorganizing, and the like and the drive would get wiped out, it's not worth it.

update- just ordered the ANTEC 3.5" USB/eSATA ACTIVELY COOLED HARD DRIVE ENCLOSURE - MX-1 with the Seagate 1.5 TB Serial ATA/300, 32MB Buffer Retail Boxed Hard Drive.- ST315005N1A1AS-RK for $180 with tax. only about $25 more than the mybook home and an extra 500 gb. hope it works... big shout out to rich584- that guy is the most helpful person I've met on these here interwebs... I'd still like you all to help me figure out how to stop my HDD from formatting when the receiver is reset. Hopefully it was just a western digital mybook home problem and I won't get it with my new setup. but if you think it will, please give me suggestions

That's the exact setup I went with a couple days ago. I did some tests of resetting the receiver and switching back to the internal drive then back to the esata and everything works great.

which reciever do you have? since I bought this yesterday, I've gotten a PM from a couple people who say that the 22-100(the one I have) seems to always have a resetting problem(lose data when you reset) that apparently doesn't happen on the hr21-700s. I didn't get a chance to test it out yesterday as I got home very late, watched the OT of the basketball game, put in the new hard drive and passed out. Will toy with it tonight and update tomorrow.
I've gone through two hard drives suggested on here, and also tried an old 20gb hdd I found sitting in a drawer just for giggles, and every single one worked as far as being recognized. I think maybe some people are just confused about how to power everything on in succession to get the reciever to read the drive. or maybe I just got very very lucky and didn't get a reciever from hell...

I have a HR20-700. I guess my testing wouldn't apply to you, but I'm really happy with it so far.

my hr/23-700 was super slow and made an annoying humming beeping noise, couldnt take it, so bought the hr/22-100, for hr/22 so far no buzzing humming but still slow response, cant tell which is faster, varies, i know, more importantly, ive been unsuccesfully trying to hook up an esata to both units, i bought the antec veris mx -1 not sure if there is diff. between antec mx-1 and antec veris mx-1 enclosure, bought at best buy, also bought the western digital caviar green power 2tb hd to go with,,, so far cant get dvr to recognize, however the wd caviar 2tb is making high pitched squeeling when starting up, is this hd defective? does anyone know of any 2Tb drives that will work, and is my antec veris mx-1 enclosure gonna work or should i buy a new esata cable for it, i am so frustrated someone please help.
im going to keep trying untill success also should i try a free agent xtreme 1.5tb, i heard a guy witha hr22 got that to work.

Just an observation, but the true meaning of this thread seems to have been lost :nono2:. The beginning post said:

    • Please help keep this thread short, so that newbies can easily find the info they need. (Huge threads make it hard for people to find what they need.)
    • Please keep chit-chat to a minimum. There are other huge eSATA threads with plenty of chit-chat.
    • If you have new info, please specify both the HR-model and the exact model of the eSATA box/cable.
    • If you have have updates about info you posted before, please provide it by editing your previous post (not by making a new post).

I'm a little shocked by the amount of brainpower on this forum, yet no organized way presenting the data. It seems like one guy just tries to out-do the previous guy and point out why they're wrong. At least be courteous to the forum and go back and edit/delete your chit-chat posts.

I understand that what works on one may not work on another...but how taking that info and organizing it into a discernible data sheet or something. Maybe someone needs to step up and keep the first post up to date with working/non-working setups.

What about something like this as a suggestion to go at the front of this thread, and someone would upkeep it. Seems like quite a few are on here continuosly and should have no problem in updating it once a week?

Excellent contributions from many. Thanks! But, it might be even more useful if people would specify the manufacturer of the HR unit. There is considerable evidence that HR21-100's behave differently from the units from other manufacturers. I have used several different HDs in an Antex MX-1, and none work on the HR21-100. Main problem is that they reformat on every reboot. This appears to be a unique issue with the -100's.

Do you have any external HD running with the 21-100? I'm in the market for one.

Well I drove 160 miles round trip to get me one of them
eSATA xternal hard drives. I couldn't find any of the recommended
model numbers so I ended up buying a Western Digital "My Book Home
Edition" eSATA 1tb, model-number WD10000H1CS, which the Best Buy clerk assured me would work.
I have spent most of the day trying to get it work and my HR20-700 will not recognize it.

I finally tried it out on my HR22-100 and it worked on the very first try.
Great! I already have a 500gb, on this unit and it.'s in the wrong location.

Question: Am I doing something wrong, or is it that the WD eSATA will not work with the HR20-700?

Any help will be greatly appreciated...

    thanks,

    Bill

Never listen to BestBuy clerks. They usually don't really know what they are talking about. When I go to Best Buy, I Google on my iPhone if I have a question about product.

It's quite possible the drive will work on one device and not another. I think on balance, the WD MyBook drives have not had great success as ext drives for the HR units.

If you want something that works reliably order the Antec MX-1 eSATA drive enclosure and a large drive for it. You should even be able to pull the drive out of your MyBook enclosure and use that (it will kill your warranty and it probably more expensive than it needs to be, but might be better than driving that distance again).

This Antec MX-1 mentioned so many times here - would some of the owners open it and post pictures what is inside of it ?

My opinion ( based on EE and IT experience): less components = better/reliable eSATA enclosure; ie ideally it must have only one straight connection between internal SATA disk connector and eSATA connector on a back of the box.

The enclosure has a circuit board and bridge chip for USB

The manual showing it broken apart is here:

    http://www.antec.com/pdf/manuals/mx-1 manual.pdf

It seems to be very well made, includes both USB and eSATA cables.

I'm attempting to gather knowledge of presence a chip what I know using inside of Seagate enclosures what intercept SATA signals between a disk and a PC. What is by my opinion is posing a few problems.
As I say before - better choice is short eSATA cable and no chip inside for eSATA enclosure. I see only one purpose of the chip - better signaling for long cables, but all DVR users keep the enclosure very close to DVR.

I have one of these, and can probably speak for many others. They work great, but I am not inclined to go open mine up and take it apart to find out what chip it has. Sorry. They aren't that expensive. You can get one for about $35 if you keep an eye out on prices.
