Can someone explain in simple terms what Ethernet port is/can be used for? I have noticed them on just about all DN receivers. Can it be used to connect receiver without using dish?

Thanks, we can't forget about the billing! LOL I hope ya'll have a lot of patience with me, I'm upgrading from SD to HD with a 4kUHD tv, need new dish, the works. Gotta take a break now though, my all time favorite Christmas movie is on. (National Lampoons Christmas Vacation).

Rule of thumb, no Dish Network or DIRECTV receivers will work without a Dish, to receive linear programming that is.

The phone line or ethernet connection are used for ordering PPV and for accessing the "my account" app on the receiver.

Other methods of buying PPV or checking account information does not change the fact that subscribers can do these functions on their DISH receiver over the phone line or Internet (if connected).

The thread starter asked what the ethernet port could be used for... it can be used for that... it will communicate STB info to Dish, sure... but it also can be used to order PPVs and pay/manage your account. Obviously you have to have an Internet connection for that to work. Otherwise, where would you be connecting the ethernet port? That goes without saying.

I suggest my entire posts be read. They are short, but they still contain the caveats. If you read the posts there is no need for misdirection.
