We need to do what Israel does after an event like this. Honor those who have been hurt/killed, find out who did it (obviously, much harder in the USA), clean up the mess, and get back to life.

PS - I agree with James Long on his supposition.

I remember when I used to drive by the two huge LP tanks just off the southeast expressway in Boston back in the 1970s, thinking how easy it would be for anyone working on a construction job that uses dynomite to take a stick and blow one of these tanks and everything around it to kingdom come. A couple of years ago, I was driving through a campus during a class change with a couple thousand students walking out in the open when a news item came on the radio, saying how a suicide bomber had screwed up, killing only himself, thinking, how can someone screw up mindless killing of people when all anyone in a car would have to do is just drive around mowing people down and kill a few hundred before he got stopped. I am amazed that our country is not victimized more by terrorism than it has been, and I am concerned that a widely publicized indicent like this may trigger a new norm.

This is nothing new. It's been happening since the late 60s. The 70s saw quite a number of these types of events, but they weren't as well publicized and most have been forgotten.

Yes, and it goes back much further. For example, the LA Times building was bombed in 1910 kiling 21 newspaper employees and injuring 100. The anarchist movement violence included the United States Senate reception room bombing of 1915 and the 1919 bombing of Attorney General of the United States Alexander Mitchell Palmer’s house. He was targeted a second time when, in June 1919, eight mail bombs exploded almost simultaneously in several U.S. cities.

    Nothing new under the Sun....

That is doubtful. IF N Korea is about anything, it is about attention and publicity. I guarantee that if N Korea had anything to do with it, they would have been on TV before the US news crews were on TV bragging.

I think they are competent enough... just doesn't fit their "gimme attention" m.o.

FWIW, my suppositions on the bombings...

    • I personally believe it's homegrown or domestic for one big reason--it's the week of April 15th. Historically in this country, this week has seen strange things going on: Branch Davidian compound in Waco, which ended violently on April 19th; the Oklahoma City bombings that occurred on April 19th; Columbine High School on April 20th; Virginia Tech shooting massacre on April 16th; the anniversary of Hitler's birth (many white supremacist groups react to this); tax day on the 15th; etc.
    • The media ridiculously sensationalizes this. Example--on ABC World News with Diane Sawyer, the intro was a deep-sounding man's voice with a slow, deliberate, horror-sounding "Terror in Boston". I was next expecting a macabre, "Bwahahahaha" to come from the voice. If anyone can dig up that intro, check for yourself and see how over the top it is.
Regarding the first point above, if anyone thinks those events and the week of April 15th are coincidental I've got a bridge in Brooklyn to sell you.

I'm willing to bet that this won't be the last time this country sees such a terror act during this week.

Such attempts have not ended up with hundreds killed. People have tried to mow down crowds with cars ... it doesn't work as well as you might expect.

I am very happy when those who wish to commit mass murder screw up.

It happened after a vehicle accident in Indiana, but there the mixup was not noticed until after the funeral. (The survivor was injured to the point where she was not easily recognizable.)

I agree. Felt that way as it unfolded. Law enforcement can't speculate, but I can. I would bet it turns out to be some "home grown" phsyco.
I just can't get my head around how someone can do something like this and kill and mame random victems.

I agree it's likely domestic. As for ABC, maybe it was mainly the tone, but I think anyone who was there at the time would consider the description apt. It would be a terrifying situation, even if one wasn't seriously injured.

The other thing, all the people that ran to help in whatever way they could, and not just first responders. There are good people in the world, and that gives some hope.

I also hope that if a suspect is named in the media, that they were really involved. We don't need another Richard Jewell.

One was sent to the President, from the same sender.

Though some reports say it is still not confirmed that they had ricin. They could have had castor bean residue which gives a positive for ricin, but not necessarily the concentrated toxin.

I had been taking prior reports of the investigators not having suspects with a grain of salt, just like I take a lot of reports about the 9-11 hijackers's identities with a grain of salt. The police have to play it close to the vest until they make the apprehension.

It appears that it is connected to the marathon bombings. In fact, one of the marathon bomber suspects, the one in the black cap, is dead after a shootout with police. The other suspect, the one wearing the backward white cap, is on the run and not yet captured.
