I was enticed to sign up by being told they were going to add 100 HD National channels and that they weren't going to raise the price.

Sure seems like a price increase to me.

First, it was UP TO 100. Second, a price increase is a mandatory $4.99 added to a package, not an optional package for $4.99.

D* could have charged everyone $5 more, but, D* told everyone the new HD would NOT cost more. So they decided instead to take away some channels and still charge more, go figure.

Perhaps this might be merged with the 7,649 other threads on this topic?? :D

Then it might get hidden. Perhaps if the D* folks reading the boards see all the seperate threads regarding this someone might realize what a bad decision not informing anyone of the new package was.

Did they cost more for the last 3 months?
    Yes/No?

Will it cost you anything more until March 2008?
    Yes/No?

Did you think there was never going to be a price increase?
    Yes/No?

Really... you are certain more is to come?

Why not direct some of that anger at the content providers that are continuing to raise their own prices...

Or direct some of that anger at the production companies that are raising their prices

Or direct some of that anger at the people that work for the industry that are raising their prices...

Or direct some of that anger at the factors that are causing them to demand those increases..

    ect....

This is a chain reaction affect of increases all the way up the hilt.

DirecTV is not alone in price increases....
Or providing options to meet the demands of Ala-Carte....
Every carrier is in the same boat.

Notification has been available for over 3 months.
As for any reason on why some people got it, other didn't...

They had multiple forms of communication:

    -) Bill Inserts
    -) Direct Mailings
    -) Automated Phone Calls
    -) DirecTV.COM website updates
-) Forum/Blog postings (And not just DBSTalk)
-) And TV Commercials (there were two during an episode of Human Weapon that I just watched last night)

So other then a private visit to the front door... how much more communication could they/should they have done?

The information about HDExtra has been available for 3+ months.
And even more so over the last month, especially after the HDNet lawsuit, may other publications picked up on the information and discussed the HDExtra Pack.

Question 1 of course is no.
Question 2, they will never cost me anything. :)
Question 3, a normal yearly price increase is expected. A new fee for new HD channels 3 months after they launch is very different.

    Why?

The Digital Broadcats requirement has ZERO to do with DirecTV.

They can still charge what ever they want for their distribution system...

And it is February 2009, when the Broadcasts all have to be Digital.

I for one received no mailings, phone calls, or bill inserts and I do not watch commercials, that is why I have a DVR. If I didn't frequent this or other DBS forums I would not have known.

So one of their methods of communication... did reach you.

Have you opted out of paper mailings from them? (I know I have, hence why I didn't get a paper mailing).

I know when I here an automated message on my answer machine, I rarely listen to it...

There is no guaranteed 100% effective method for communicating the change. Okay, there is one.... door by door to the 7+ million customers, and have them sign-off.... but then the price increase would have ended up more like $50 month vs $4.99 to offset the cost of that communication method.

I'm feeling a bit fleeced right now. 3 weeks ago I accepted the "free upgrade" from HR10-250 to HR20 so I would be able to get all the new HD channels. Now they've take some away. It sure feels like bait and switch to me. Don't wikipedia me. Give me a moment.

Have you been charged anything more since the new channels went live?
    Are you beeing charged now?

Did you think the price would NEVER increase?

It reached me yes. I see post here from members with 21 posts (the OP of this topic). How many forms of communication reached them?

I receive mailings, I recently got one telling me I can get $50 for every new customer I refer I believe.

Why did I not receive the new package mailing?

Umm... you still get them for the next 3 months with no charge.
And you didn't get 3 of them on that HR10, so you wouldn't have had them anyway.

And the other two... if you would have stuck with the HR10... you would eventually not even have the option to have them, or the other ones as well.

As stated before, take the money you're not spending on the 5 channels or premium channels and put it towards a Netflix or Blockbuster Total Access subscription. If you love movies that much, you won't have to wait the 40 to 120 days for new movies to make it to D*.
