As another data point, I too went thru the numbers (cable company literally knocking on my door to tell me about their "Triple Play" offer).

All 3 services (TV, Internet and VOIP) for 29.95 each/month, so roughly 90.00/month for the services. This is where it gets ridiculous: each DVR requires the monthly box rental (fine) but also requires the monthly service fee as well! So the DVR costs 5.00 (rental) + 9.95 (service) PER DVR!! Basically 2 DVRs would cost me 30.00/month JUST FOR THE BOXES.

DirecTV Total Choice Plus with locals is 51.99. Plus 9.95 for HD access, plus 5.99 for DVR service. Add another 10.00 on top of that for my 2 extra receivers (3 total.....and all 3 are DVRs). My VOIP provider is 14.99/month. My cable internet costs 50.00/month.

Cables Triple Play "deal" would cost me 125.00/month for 2 DVRs and a regular box.

Having everything separate, and 3DVRs costs me 148/month.

Now comes the fine print on the cable deal: after the first year, your plan slowly starts to go away.....if you want to keep the same programming level the Triple Play starts with, the cable portion goes up to 55.00/month. You can keep the cheap price you have, but you have to (drastically) lower the programming you receive. A friend of mine bought into this, and I think his year is up soon.....now maybe they will re-up him for the heck of it, but I dont like relying on special deals to keep programming costs competitive (equipment is OK, I just dont like having to rely on someone having a good day and "letting" me pay a normal price for their service). AND it gets even more expensive in the 2nd year.

Nutshell: cable was great for the first year, and they even admitted that to me. After a year, D* is the better choice, especially if you have any more than 1 DVR (and BTW, the Cablevision DVR is a POS......factor in some up front cost if I wanted to buy a Tivo S3). D* and other services cost me an extra 28.00/month. Cable would cost me an extra 30.00/month after a year. But thats not counting any price increases that cable loves to come up with.

And now D* has more HD :)

Cancelled Direct last night, just got a call from Direct..

    D- " I see you have a disconnect date?"
    Me- Yes I do.
D- "Do you mind me asking why?"
Me - Your upgrade to HD is too expensive for equipment. Dish will give it to me for free.
D - "Well I can take care of that for you, what do we have to do to keep your business"
Me - Really? Well, just match Dish's offer on equipment. (Note: I didn't ask them to match program offers)
D- "What equipment do you need?"
Me - 1 HD DVR and 1 HD reciever.
D - " Okay, I'd be happy to take care of you, the HD box will be free and you have to pay $299 for the DVR"
Me - WHAT? Thanks , but no thanks. Like I said, Dish is giving me the equipment for FREE and discounting my packages.
D- " Oh, well you'd have to pay for the one box. Should we continue your service?"
Me - NO!!!!!, Dish is coming on Friday.
D - " Okay, sorry to hear that. We'd be happy to welcome you back in the future"
Me - Thank you , but no. Goodbye.

Are they total idiots? They call me with the same $300 upgrade offer as before. Direct needs to get their act together if they want to keep customers.

I will refuse to pay $200 for something I don't own. That is the dumbest business model I can think of. I have been paying them over $100 month and it was due to go up, what fools.

Dish is going to give you the 1 HDDVR free.
    Extra equipment means extra money.
But, its still $100 less than D*'s offer to you, so, hope your happy with dish!

You don't seem to understand, as in this case it worked out for you, cuz Direct was too much and theres the dish offeres AS A NEW CUSTOMER, and your good. the problem is, a few years down the road your now with Dish, everything is great, you want to add another Hd receiver, GUESS WHAT? same problem, you'll pay through the nose to add one thing, once your a customer they no longer care, it happened with me and Dish. now I'm with Direct(as of in 2 weeks from now when its installed)

Sorry, they are giving me 1 HDDRV and 1 HD box for free.

One time fee of $49 which they are giving me a credit for on first bill.

Out of pocket for me ZERO.

Well if that's the case a year and half down the road, then I'll go back to Direct...

I'm the customer and it's my money. Who ever is going to right by me is going to get my money.

Too often companies and consumers alike forget , WE ARE IN CHARGE. We choose to pay or not to pay.

I'm not asking for anything more then dish is offering, in fact I'm asking for LESS then Dish is offering just as a matter of convenience for me.

Why would you want woo a new customer with incentives and not give the SAME incentive for existing customers. Well they don't think you will leave and a certain percentage won't.

Car companies give customer loyalty rebates for a reason. They know how hard it is to woo new customers.

But they never will and I have to say hear, hear... I have been with these characters for almost 11 1/2 years...they have given me the run around and also given me a ton of credits, free equipment, etc... Geesh, you can call ten times and get ten different answers to the same question. O.K., maybe I'm exaggerating a bit, but you get the point...

Call about the NBA LP HD blackouts and spin the wheel of bull. They are so sincere when they talk to you. They really sound like they know what they are talking about. You almost feel like they care. It's amazing. D* is so practiced at it. Not to get on them too much. Most businesses do this...Besides if they really "manned up" people really would jump ship because other businesses of the same type (Dish) would start pandering like crazy to all of the people leaving D*.

I love D* If you are polite and nice, make a good point, you can almost always get them to give you something. No HD, credits...broken HR20, credits...missed installs, MASSIVE CREDITS...I love D* OK rambling over...

The voice of reason...we have the power...if they do not meet their end of the deal... NBA LP HD blackouts. You have to go after those credits to make up the difference...

Its just like free razors in the mail. They send you a razor and maybe a couple blades for nothing. What do you do? Go out and buy more blades because you like the free razor.

Give a new customer equipment, and a commitment contract and they are yours for that amount of time. Just like if you get another free razor in the mail, when your time (blades) are up (gone), you can look for an alternative or just stay with what you have.
