Free trial of Choice Xtra, Sun 5/23 to Mon 5/31 2010. See shows from National Geographic HD, the Biography Channel HD, the Tennis Channel HD, Planet Green HD and more.

I assume that, as in the past, the free trial starts and ends at 6am ET.

I already get TennisHD (217) - and I don't subscribe to the Choice Extra. You SURE it's part of Choice Extra?

I'm actually glad to hear this since I just downgraded to the select package in an effort to save money. Time to fire up the DVR! Thanks for the info.

All I know is that, according to directv.com, the Tennis Channel isn't in either the current Total Choice package (57.49) or the current Choice package (58.99) but is in the current Choice Xtra (63.99).

    Maybe you're "grandfathered."

According to www.directv.com/DTVAPP/packages/base_packages.jsp ("Compare TV packages") —

If you have the current Total Choice (57.49) package, the free trial will supposedly add these HD channels:

    • 206 ESPNHD — ESPN HD
    • 239 T101HD — The 101 (Virtual)
    • 249 COMHD — Comedy Central HD
    • 269 HISTHD — History Channel HD
    • 281 HDTH — HD Theater
    • 284 SCIHD — Science Channel HD
    • 290 DISeHD — Disney Channel HD
    • 360 FNCHD — Fox News Channel HD
    • 614 ESPUHD — ESPNU HD
    • ??? FS??HD — FSN in your area

If you have the current Choice (58.99) package, the free trial will supposedly add these HD channels:

    • 276 NGCHD — National Geographic Channel HD
    • 307 WGNHD — WGN America HD
    • 607 SPDHD — Speed Channel HD
    • 618 FUELHD — Fuel TV HD

If you have EITHER package, the free trial will supposedly ALSO add these eight HD channels:

    • 215 NHLHD — NHL Network HD
    • 216 NBAHD — NBA TV HD
    • 217 TNNSHD — Tennis Channel HD
    • 266 BIOHD — Biography Channel HD
    • 286 PLGNHD — Planet Green HD
    • 359 FBNHD — Fox Business Channel HD
    • 603 VSHD — Versus HD
    • 613 CBSCHD — CBS College Sports HD

BTW, Total Choice (57.49) is missing quite a few important HD channels that Choice (58.99) has:

    • 206 ESPNHD — ESPN HD
    • 239 T101HD — The 101 (Virtual)
    • 249 COMHD — Comedy Central HD
    • 269 HISTHD — History Channel HD
    • 281 HDTH — HD Theater
    • 284 SCIHD — Science Channel HD
    • 290 DISeHD — Disney Channel HD
    • 360 FNCHD — Fox News Channel HD
    • 614 ESPUHD — ESPNU HD
    • ??? FS??HD — FSN in your area

My 2004 package is called "Total Choice," but it appears to have all of the HD channels that are in either the current Total Choice (57.49) or the current Choice (58.99); this is "grandfathering."

Therefore, in my case, the Choice Xtra (63.99) free trial adds the eight HD channels that are currently in neither cheaper package.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what you mean by "current" Total Choice package, but I believe you only see that selection if you are grandfathered in TC.

I've had TC since 2003 and I get all of the channels you mentioned except:

    • 215 NHLHD — NHL Network HD
    • 216 NBAHD — NBA TV HD
    • 217 TNNSHD — Tennis Channel HD
    • 266 BIOHD — Biography Channel HD
    • 286 PLGNHD — Planet Green HD
    • 613 CBSCHD — CBS College Sports HD

Me too, and I would add Science Channel.

I have had Total Choice (or its equivalent) for over a decade.

The directv.com page I referenced said that my current package is TC, but as I noted the channel lineup was much smaller than mine. I really have no idea what's going on, but I assumed that the TC lineup they are presenting to me reflects today's reality.

OK, now I see what you're saying. And you're right, that channel listing from the web site is worthless.

I am grandfathered in also, can't remember how long, but I have been with D* since January of 1995. I have been thinking about changing my package, but once you make a change of any sort you lose the grandfathered package and pricing. I also have an old HBO/Showtime package that costs $38 a month, and has pretty much all the premiums except Starz, and is also grandfathered in. I am then charged $4 a month extra for all the Encore channels, as I believe they were dropped from total choice around the time of the grandfathering, to the best of my memory.

I rarely watch the premium channels, and not to digress, I am a little miffed that the additional HBOs in HD have not materialized......... would make it a lot easier for me to swallow the $38 a month fee (I refuse to watch SD, sorry). Anyway, since I rarely watch them and have a DVD collection of about 800 movies, I've been thinking of going to "Choice Ultimate" and dropping the premiums. My question for you experts is, will I still get charged a separate fee for "HD"? The D* website lists the HD channels carried by Choice Ultimate, is there an additional charge for the HD versions that are listed? I realize the HD Extra Pack is an extra charge for channels that are not carried in SD, that's not what I'm referring to. Thanks.

Any HD access = one time $10.00 per month extra. Doesn't matter whether your package has 1 HD channel or 100. So far the only time you pay extra for a particular SD channel in HD is the the NFL Sunday Ticket, which they appear to be doing away with this year, the itemized extra charge anyway.

I have Total Choice ($57.49/mo) and already receive most of these channels, even though they aren't listed by DTV as being included in that package. If I "upgrade" to Choice ($58.99), won't I lose these extra channels? The message in the "Enabling MRV using your home networking" seems to be that you can upgrade for $1/mo to become eligible for MRV. However, it appears that I'd have to upgrade to Choice Xtra at $63.99 (+$5.50) to keep my current channels. Am I missing something?
