Im in the fuel every day group for my work truck. Diesel to be exact. Just went up to $3.99. Regular Unleaded up 10 cents over night to $3.55.
Cant do anything about the work truck (we pass the cost on to the customers, so when you coffee and lattes go up, you know why)...but for my personal trip to work and back, I went to WalMart, bought a full face helmet, some warm gloves, and dug out my leather jacket. Comes in handy on these 39 degree mornings riding my 80mpg Honda Rebel 250 motorcycle to work and leaving my 18mpg Dodge Dakota in the garage.

GasBuddy.com is now reporting $6.099 :eek2: as the highest in California at the Chevron station at Olympic Blvd. & Figueroa St. in Los Angeles.

They are also reporting $4.199 at the Pilot Station on I-5 just north of the I-505 interchange where for years I always could buy cheap gas when I had to travel to Sacramento. :(

Though I'm repeating myself, prices are now the highest I've seen at the corner of US 101 and SR 20 in Willits and the thing is I realize that it was in February 2010 that I saw the end of gas under $3 a gallon and my guess is that it was February 2012 that I saw the end of gas under $4 a gallon:
    • 3/05 -Safeway $4.199, Chevron $4.259, ARCO $4.169 cash only price

We broke $4.00.x for the first time in suburban Maryland last week. We had previously topped out at $3.99.9 during the previous, most severe price spike.

I substantially restored the declining gas mileage of my Astrovan by 4 to 5 MPG by replacing the rotor, distributor cap, plugs and wires and then putting gas treatment snake oil in it. Have any of you ever tried to change plugs and wires on an Astrovan... or tried to pay someone else to do it? I gave up after three days of trying to do it myself, and to put that in perspective, in my younger days, I have replaced one engine, two automatic transmissions and four manual transmissions.

I tried to enlist a service chain to install new plugs. I went to NTB, where I contracted for an "electronic diagnostic" for $105, and at the same time I expressly commissioned them to furnish as well as install plugs and plug wires so that they wouldn't be cheated out of the $50 mark-up on those parts. After nearly an hour, a mechanic said he hadn't tested it yet, but he really thought it would be worth my while to have the compression checked at the same time. Since I had been seeing a little vapor in my exhaust for the 40,000 miles I have driven this used vehicle, I figured it was worth paying another hundred and a half to find out the magnitude of that problem while the plugs were accessible, so I approved it.

I then went to a MacDonalds, and two hours later, I called NTB back and they said they hadn't started yet but that I really needed a fuel injector test and a fuel pump test and that all four of those tests would come to about $550. They also said that they definitely wouldn't have time to finish all that before the workday was over, and since the had other promised work to complete, they'd like to make it the first vehicle they'd work on tomorrow.

My van is 17 years old, with 205,000 miles on it. I checked on Craigslist and found half a dozen of that vintage priced from $800 to $1,200 and another half a dozen for a few hundred dollars more. As I have explained to them several times, it makes no sense to do hundreds of dollars worth of tests to determine whether I need a five hundred to one thousand dollar repair, because the vehicle can be replaced for less than that. All I wanted was to have someone replace the plugs and then, either the performance of the vehicle would become acceptable, or it wouldn't and I would replace it.

I told them I was taking the vehicle with me and they didn't charge me anything for wasting my day.

I then went to Firestone and asked for a diagnostics and the furnishing of plugs and wires. My request confused the service manager, but I finally educated him to the point where he was amenable to writing the order. He said he had put a call in for the price of the parts, but he needed me to sign an authorization that included the $105 for the diagnostics and he would fill in the parts price in a few minutes. I said I would do that but I had to see the "parts price" before he started. A few minutes later, he had the parts price: $345.00. I'm sure it was a parts and labor price and so even that $450 total was too high.

The next day, I drove the vehicle to a local independent garage and they agreed to do the job. Their Craigslist ad said they would install furnished parts, and while I had bought six plugs for $1.50 each, I wasn't going to engender bad will from someone who might actually discover something repairable while changing the plugs and so I told them to furnish the parts.

They charged me $10 something each for the six plugs and $40 for the wires, and the total paid was $240. They also dorked with it for an hour after that because they were mystified that the performance got no better. I was satisfied with what they did for work but very disappointed with their results. When I got on the highway, it didn't even run as well as it had before. I suspect that, in attempting to further improve it, they tweaked something unsuccessfully and that tweaking might have been just slightly deleterious to my high speed engine performance but they might not have noticed that in the shop.

It got so bad that when I got home, I took the engine cover off and determined that they had swapped the plug wires on two cylinders that weren't firing. Most likely, they did that while groping around and and just never returned them. I'm ashamed to admit that I've done similar things when groping around with low voltage DC wiring in electrically dead circuitry.

But I also heard a faint "click, click click" that I recognized as the sound of arcing to the block, but because the engine is buried so deep, I couldn't see where it was coming from, so I waited until after nightfall when I was able to see a blue arc, but I just couldn't reach in far enough to grope around and find the nearest plug.

I took the vehicle back to the repair shop and had them put the wire back on. The mechanic had to raise the vehicle bottom to six feet above the ground and even then, use a mirror on a stick and a flashlight to locate the hidden plug.

As you might imagine, my engine performance improved, but it was still poorer than it had been recently, so it became "snake oil" time. I bought two small bottles of "gas treatment", that includes a solvent that is chemically capable of dissolving whatever "varnish" gets deposited in fuel injector paths, though it doesn't really get applied to those deposits in an effective manner, and then, in another store, I found it priced for a dollar a bottle less, so I have now "treated" about half a dozen tankfuls of gas and believe it or not, I am the one lucky sucker in a dozen or fewer who actually benefited from doing so and my gas mileage has gradually improved. Looks like I'll be keeping my Astrovan for a while.

Mike, I admire your tenacity. I have given up on cars for poor performance several times at considerable expense when I replaced them.- in retrospect, bad decisions. I replaced my '56 Chevy delRay with a '57 Mercury Montclair after the Chevy stalled out on me a few times. The Merc was a beast, but gave horrible gas mileage. Within a year, I replaced the Merc with a '58 Triumph TR-3A, which I loved and wish I had kept, despite the fact that it was a horrible winter car.
Over the years, I've made several bad decisions, replacing vehicles for what I now view as dumb reasons. If I hadn't been so impulsive, I'd probably be a good $20K richer today. Lesson learned. I fully intend to keep my 2007 Hyundai Santa Fe, despite the siren song of vehicles with better gas mileage.
A former co-worker of mine had a simple rule for replacing a car - 10 years, 100 thousand miles or one accident. Sure makes a lot of sense to me now.

I sure wish I still had my old 280Z. Not only did it get good mileage when I wanted it to, it would climb a mountain in high gear, and flat make it from one stop light to another in record time.

Everything I have had since got worse mileage, and didnt have the power. Of course, I can haul a bunch of crap in my Dakota that wouldnt fit in the 280Z, but it just isnt as much fun.
