I have a question. My hr20 has the double play feature with the down arrow. Can you do this with the genie and cycle through 5 channels or do you have to record them?

Just 2. Record if you want 5.

A Genie will only swap between two tuners using Double Play, just like the other HRs.

Definitely an interesting idea. This could probably be replicated by creating a favorites list of the five channels and setting them to record, right? I would think it would give all of the same functionality, but just with a lot more work.

I have a college football problem and would really like to be able to use that feature with 5 channels.

I suppose you could use Quick Tune to jump between five recording channels. As long as there aren't any recording conflicts.

That's about the only way I see this working.

Otherwise, the Genie would have to buffer five tuners and have a scheme to swap between them. That's a lot of disk space and coding. I doubt that'll happen.

I do like the quick tune idea though.

Here's what I've done during the major golf tournaments on my HR24.
Enable double play and tune one buffer to one channel and then using the other buffer for another channel.
Now change the channel on one of the buffers and use the previous button to switch between those two channels.
Now switch to the other buffer and select the fourth channel and again use previous to switch between them.

Now if you don't forget where you are you can easily switch around four channels.

It doesn't really answer the question asked but, in your scenario, you wouldn't have any buffers for the four channels?

With the Genie you could potentially have five buffered channels to swap around and not miss a thing. :)

I have been a DirecTV customer since 2001; when I moved recently, I decided to give the local cable company a chance and used them with a TIVO XL4. Now I'm back at DTV with a Genie. The one thing I really miss is being able to view and buffer 4 tuners like I could on the TIVO. Only downside was that all buffers were only 30 minutes.

Seems like it would be simple if you can record 5 at once. It would be a sports lovers dream. Could you imagine that with Sunday ticket?

I don't know, I've seen pretty irate posts when something happens and a football fan loses the buffer of a game they are doubleplaying.

Um, record all five channels, and then tune to all five channels at least once. Then use the last 4 option in the info banner to flip between them all. I think that would work for ya. Plus you'd get to easier choose which channel to flip to.
