The cooling fan on my HR34 has started making noise and stops spinning sometimes. After an hour or so of not cooling the box stops working. I'm going to call CS tonight, does anyone know if they are sending out HR 44's as replacements yet? Just curious if anyone has had to replace a Genie in the past month or so and received an HR44?

Are you looking at loosing many important recordings ?

Might want to drag out the VCR and download some footage. Or borrow a Magnavox 535 . .

    :righton:

not sure I would use canned air to blow out the fan, but someone else here might weigh in on that for you

I will lose some recordings but most of which I can go back and get OnDemand. Maybe I will get lucky and get a HR44, but from what I have read on here, most people say they are only marginally faster than the 34. Peds or gov can you comment on how fast the HR44 is?

The worst part will be getting all of the series links setup.

In this day and age, there's no excuse for these not to be backed up to DirecTV's servers for any DVR that is connected to the internet. Tivo has had the ability to manage Season Passes on their website for years, including reordering the priority for a given box and dragging them between boxes. It is great. Biggest thing I miss from my Tivo.

Do you have the Directv version of Tivo? How does it stack up to the original?

if by "original" you mean the SD DirecTV TiVO, is pretty much the same

Is the fan always on, or does it turns off and on after a certain temperature?

You might have better luck if you have them send a tech out to your house, that way you can at least ask him what he's got...

Also, yes, the 44s are significantly faster than the 34s. The 34s are about the same in speed as the 24s though, so if you're picturing the crawling speed of the 21s, don't worry about that.

I would comment on the speed of my HR44 versus the 34, but Peds keeps telling me I am beating a dead horse!

Well, I called D* last night. They basically refused to send out a tech for a simple receiver replacement. The new Genie will be here Friday. If an HR34 shows up is there a way to send it back or ask for a tech at that point so that I can get a HR44?

If your receiver is defective, you get a Genie for a Genie. Could be either model.

But how is the current box sited? Does it get plenty of unheated air?

I currently have a fan blowing on it to keep it cool enough so that I can watch some of the recorded shows. My plan is to keep the external fan blowing on it through the weekend to watch as many unviewed recordings as I can.

Has anyone actually gotten a 44 as a replacement or is that just a myth? :) I was hoping that they would be phasing out the 34's by now.

The HR34 is barely a couple years old if that. I'm sure they're still distributing brand new ones, much less how long the platform will live on in refurbished units

According to SolidSignal, the 34 has been discontinued.

The point still stands, the boxes aren't getting trashed if they come back to DirecTV, they get refurbished and reused. I'd bet the cost to build a Genie, when you include development costs, is probably north of a grand. They're not going to toss that out so quickly.
