I have been a DirecTV customer for a number of years and currently have the "Total Choice Plus" package along with HD and DVR service. (we have 3 hd dvr's and 1 sd dvr - monthly bill is approx $80)

I also have phone and internet service with AT&T and found out they have a $5 monthly discount for also having DirecTV. However, the problem is that D considers my Total Choice Plus package to be expired and I can't get the $5 discount unless I upgrade to a current package.

The CSR says I will be getting 17 additional channels and I wont loose anything. The new package costs a couple of bucks more per month, but then I would save a couple of bucks with the bundle discounts.

I am a little leery of changing - should I go for it?

I am in the exact same boat here - same Total Choice Plus service since it came out.

They likely have a goal to eliminate as many grandfathered plans as possible.

I also got an offer call last week. If you move off our grandfathered plan, you will end up paying $2 a month more for essentially the same plan when the offer expires. In my case, they offered some additional "free" premium channels and waived the DVR fee for the same period of time.

As long as you are willing to track the timeframe for the offer, and pay $2 a month later on, its actually a great deal in the interim months.

But that's a personal choice that's up to you, of course.

It's not uncommon for DIRECTV to honor the Grandfather packages, but if/when you make changes, you are usually asked to migrate to a new plan to get the changes you want or stay on the grandfathered plan and keep what was offered with that plan.

The new price is $3 more a month and the discount is $5 so you still save $2 a month.

I wouldn't go for it unless you really want those few new channels. Plus HD DVR service ($75.99) with 3 additional receivers ($5 each) will run you about $91/month, or $86 after your discount.

Actually with Plus HD DVR package it would be a $3 savings per month. Forgot about the dollar savings by having the Plus HD DVR package.

I am also a Total Choice Plus grandfathered account. I thought that the Choice Xtra package and Total Choice Plus were essentially the same. What additional channels does Choice Xtra have over Total Choice Plus?

I am not sure of the name of the "new package" but the CSR rattled off 17 additional channels I would be getting if I upgraded. I didn't really recognize any of the new channels, so I am not sure it would be worth much to me, but you never know until you watch them

None, Choice Extra once had a few less channels, but those have been added.

Okay. That's what I thought. That's one thing I'm not looking forward to when I upgrade to HD. I'm hoping they'll just let me keep my package and add on HD as opposed to making me switch to ChoiceXtra HD.

As long as you INSIST that they do NOT change your base pkg, it should not be a problem. Myself & at least 1/2 dozen clients ALL have TC+ w/HD & DVR, that we did NOT have to change when we all upgraded to HD.

It's $2 but case in point remains the same.

Plus HD DVR is $1 less then Choice Xtra w DVR and HD ACCESS.

I have TC+ and have had no problems adding or removing additional services (HD, DVR, movies, HD extra pack, etc.) and keeping my grandfathered package. However, I cannot make any changes online - I have to call a CSR to have it done.

I bet if you want the HD upgrade (receiver & dish) for free with a new 2 year commitment you'll be required to dump Total Choice Plus. BUT if you open your wallet and give them the $200 for the HD DVR they might let you keep Total Choice Plus. Who knows?? :D

K, thanks. When Git said the bill was approx $80, I thought it was somewhere in the $77-83 range including the 3 additional receivers instead of $89.
