    Hello everybody,

In the spring I began getting the messages that my guide has not been updated in X hours. I thought I may have had a problem with some trees so I had them cut down. After the cutting there was absolutely nothing in the way but the messages have continued. I am now thinking that I may have a dish pointing problem, Just to let you know, I have the HD package if that makes a difference.

I wrote down the transponder info yesterday whe the sky was perfectly clear, here is the info:

Your 119 signals are zero. With the 5LNB dish, the guide data comes from 119. Check your alignment, it could be slightly off.

Question: Could one of the LNBs be responsible for this ?
I ask because his 110 signals are very strong and are closer to the location of the 119.

    "Are you sure"?
A true 3LNB will have only one visible LNB, while the 5 LNB has three.
Your receiver "thinks" you have a 5 LNB and your readings look like you could have a 5 LNB with a dead 119 LNB.
Even if you had a 3 LNB and the receiver still was set for a 5 LNB, these readings don't make any sense, since you would be getting "phantom" [false] readings from the 101 LNB being displayed as readings from both 110 & 119.
With a dead 119 LNB on a 5 LNB dish, you'd have the guide error message that you are having.

If119 was off a little, you would see some signal even if it was very low. Looks like you have a bad LNB. By the way, since you are getting 110, you do not have a 3 LNB dish. The 5 LNB dishes have 3 housing with the one large housing covering 99,101,103.

I was wrong about which dish I have (that's what I get for listening to "some guy" at work), I have a 5LNB dish (thanks for the link litzdog). With the dish properly identified any ideas what the problem is?

As I posted, it looks like you have a dead 119 LNB.

Now would be a good time to change it for the SL3 LNB. As it looks like you don't really care about 110 and 119.

jdspancer, I thought I need to get 119 for the guide info. Actually that makes me wonder, if I am not getting 119 then how is my guide getting updated at all? What would a SL3 LNB do for me that my current dish is not?

I found a replacement head at the link litzdog provided, it is $49, this should fix my problem, right?

I can't thank you guys enough for all the help as I know very little about all this stuff.

With the 5LNB the guide data needs to come from both the 101 & 119 because when you're watching the channels on the 99 SAT, you get the guide data from 101 and when you're watching channels off the 103, the guide data comes from 119.
With the 3LNB the 101 SAT feed [and guide data] is always there as the LNB is hardwired this way, so whether you're watching channels from 99 or 103, the guide data is always coming from the 101.

VOS, everything you said is greek to me but I take it that a SL3 LNB is the way to go. I did a search on the net and there are way too many choices for me to know which one is a good one, do you have a link to a good SL3 dish? I will have to speak to my CFO (wife) about purchasing a new dish at this time due to getting my daughter into college next month.

Why not going in the setting of your receiver and change it to slimeline 3 instead of 5, you'll get all the sats expect 110 &119 which I think are useless in your case, and that should fix your problem, and you don't need to change your dish or LNB.
    Just a thought

Call DirecTV and tell them you have a dead LNB. They might replace the dish to the new one for free.

This is bad advice and will not fix his problem. It may stop some of the error messages. However, he will still not be receiving guide data. The LNB will still be sending down 119, which is not working.
