My HR-44 decided to reboot itself this morning upon turning it on. It started scanning the hard drive for errors and found 30 some errors but then it got within one error of correcting them all, it found 30 some more errors. This cycle won't stop. I turned the receiver off after it was over 1200 errors. Is my hard drive failing? Any suggestions to fix this? Do I need to call DirecTV and get a new receiver? Thank you in advance for your help.

Had a similar problem with my receiver. You need to let the scan complete, it may take an hour or more depending on the number of errors found. In my case after the scan completed the receiver would come back up and work OK for a few days then I would see the problem again. Good chance your hard drive is going bad and the receiver will have to be replaced, DirecTV sent me out a replacement because of the problem I had.

Your hard drive is toast. Even if the scan and repairs complete successfully, it's just a matter of time before it's totally dead. Call DirecTV and request a replacement Genie. It's free if you have their Equipment Protection Plan. Otherwise ~$20 for shipping.

This happened to my HR44 after a little more than a year of use. DTV sent a replacement. But posts about this scanning problem seem to be cropping up with some frequency on these boards. I'm wondering if the hard drives used in the HR44s are defective....

Not that I have seen a trend, but if you have is perhaps because HR44s have been out now for a while. Hard drives are very unpredictable, some last a week or less, some last 10+ years.

Had that HR44 for about a year. My two other DVRs (HR24-100 and HR23-700) have been chugging along quite nicely for years, as did previous DVRs. Curious that the HR44 choked -- as others also have, with the same telltale symptoms -- after only a little more than a year of use.

Pretty sure that there has to be at least 100+ (if no more) HR44s failing daily nationwide, the only coincidence here is that it was your turn.

I some how doubt that figure, since I doubt directv even has a million subs with HR44s.
If 100 are failing per day, they may want to recall them, since that's 3000 per month. LOL!

I had a hard drive failing in the first week on my 34. Generally, the first year (or thereabout) is the most likely time for a drive to go out if it's not due to external factors.

with the push that DirecTV is doing o the Genies, I would not be surprised that are way more than 1 million HR44s installed as of right now.

To OP: hurry up and copy the HDD before it is too late. (unless you don't care about saving your shows)
