    Cheers,

I have 3 HR24-100s that have worked well over the years without any problems. It looks like I can upgrade for free, so curious if it is worth the effort to do so? I don't know if I have a choice in which models DVR to upgrade to vs the genie / HD DVR?

    thanks

    Jeff

It really depends on what you want to do. If you need more tuners for recording or more space, it might be worth it to upgrade to a Genie to replace one of the HR24's. Just be aware that if you do that, you will be over 8 tuners and DirecTV will need to do some work to your setup. They would replace your SWM-LNB with a legacy LNB and then run 4 wires from the dish to you where you have your current main splitter. A SWM16 would be added there and your receivers would then be run off of splitters from the SWM16.

I still use my HR24-100 and have no problems with it. It's just as fast, if not a little faster than my HR34. I only upgraded for the ability to record more things at once and to have some more recording space.

Something to be aware of... If you upgrade to a HD-DVR, you are not really getting anything out of that as you really have the best HD-DVRs already. The only benefit would be if you could upgrade to a Genie for free. Also, no matter what the CSRs say, you don't need mini clients for the Genie to work with Whole Home. The HR24's will work just fine and you will be able to see a unified playlist of all your DVRs.

Personally, I prefer having separate tuners....just in case one craps out so I don't lose everything. I haven't anything on the newer stuff that I can live without. The only reason I was thinking of the upgrade is to have newer equipment without wondering if the current setup would die.

I've had my HR44 for about 10 days now. Like you've probably already read, I like the speed and I liked being able to relocate a somewhat noisy HR24 fan to the basement and replace it with a tiny, quiet C41 client that can access the 5 tuners. But here's another advantage (for some of us) that I don't see mentioned too much... I like to watch multiple near-live shows during the day, like ESPN and CNN using double-play. I say near-live because I usually back up the buffer or wait 15-30 mins before I start watching, to be able to skip commercials. With 5 tuners, I can do all that regardless of what might be scheduled to record. Nothing ever steals one of the only-2 tuners any more. And I can do all that in multiple rooms.
