If the sporting events are chosen by DirecTV ahead of time, it only has to be 1 stream (with 4 audio streams). DirecTV will then just combine the 4 feeds into one channel, and beam it to the satellite as 1 stream.

Since audio streams barely take any bandwidth, I can see DirecTV using 1 single HD channel space for such a purpose. As a matter of fact, with events like the Australian Open and the Masters, they did just that. 1 channel that combined the other channels.

It'll have 5 tuners and 2 screen PIP already, I don't see why it couldn't do a 4 PIP screen. That would be great for sports. :D

Outside of sports and news, mix channels have very little value. I fail to see how the mix channels you suggested would be worthwhile additions.
When they're not showing pro sports, which already have their own mix channels, most of them are showing the same thing.

I believe NDS wrote the app for the mix channels. The control and selection of audio is all done in the STB. The audio are just layered DD2.0 streams, and can be compressed a little bit more than normal.

Scroll through NDS's interactive applications and you'll see DirecTV Sports Mix is one of their creations.

So yeah it's just a regular MPEG2 or MPEG4 feed with a trigger that activates the mosaic application by NDS. That app reads the data stream and knows where the windows are and what audio feed each window is. From there its nothing more than a glorified second audio program selector. But the app also gets data to tell it what channel number each cell is, so if you select it, it transfers control to the STB to change channel to that number.

NDS makes the middleware (called MediaHighway) that runs all of the interactive features on the STBs. I doubt they actually wrote the app that runs on the Mix channels, though. It's just on their site as an example of what can be done with their software.

Not to mention that any time one or more of them (i.e. FOX sports regionals) are showing pro sports, any mix channel would have to be blacked out for most viewers.
