It really is different. With a subsidized cell phone, when I upgrade, I can sell the phone and get a couple hundred bucks. Can't do that with a receiver.

If you buy it outright, (which was what I meant on my post) you can definitely sell it for "a couple hundred bucks"

My uncle gave me a h20 receiver, can I activate it without a new commitment?

If the receiver is owned, was deactivated off the old account, and the old account is not in arrears, yes. You will need to get a new Access Card, which will run you $20 for shipping. Make sure you contact the Access Card Team in order to get the Access Card as well as to activate it so that a commitment is not put on your account by accident.

But I would reconsider if it's a -600. Also keep in mind it is not whole home compatible and has the old GUI. Whether this is a positive or a negative depends.

I hooked the receiver up and it works fine just not authorized, why do I need a new access card if the receiver works I dont understand unless its just another way to get twenty dollars out of you.

because you can't activate the receiver with an access card that came from another account
