    I have two questions:

    1. In setting resolutions, I discovered that my 6 year old Mitsu projection TV does not accept 720P feeds(it says so in the users manual), so that I have to have my HR 20 set with the native off. If it is on and I tune to channel 73, I get a blue screen since the TV doesn't know what to do with the 720P that ESPNHD uses.

So I keep it on 1080i with native off, but my question is what does my Mitsu TV actually receive since ESPNHD does not broadcast in 1080i ??????

Is the HR20 upconverting ESPNHD to 1080i which my Mitsu TV can handle?

    Question 2:

Is there a way to program the remote so that I do not have to toggle to AV1 from the DirecTV position in order to adjust the volume on my Harmon/Kardon receiver which is powering my surround sound??

It sure would be nice if I could leave the toggle on DirecTV to change channels and adjust the volume!!!

    1) Yes, the HR20 is converting to 1080i in this case.

    2) First, you need to have a TV programmed on the remote. Not sure why that is, but you do. Then, push the selector to AV1 on the remote and hold down mute and select until the lights flash on the top of the remote. Then, hit 993 and press Select. (I just did that from memory as I just did it last night, so I hope I got it correct.)

    I can't help you with #1. I just recieved my HR20 today.

I can offer a suggestion to solve #2. Look into a Harmony 880 or 890 remote. These remotes are universal remotes and have the ability to create "macros" to handle all of the key presses with a TV/PVR remote control. Logitech created a slick program which automatically programs most of the functions for the universal remote based on your tv, pvr, receiver, etc. I have had my Harmony for many years and cannot imagine life without it. I believe the discount warehouse stores now carry the Harmony products.

BTW did you write for the Inside Carolina publication several years ago?

You can still have Native On and 720p off if I recall correctly, but personally I think the scaler in the HR20 is quite good and I keep native off... because it does a better job with 480i content than my TV.

Koz is correct, it works very well, but you will need to switch to AV1 to turn your Harmon Kardon on/off. Switch back to D* position and you should be good to go.

Wait, I still don't understand....what code do I program in the TV mode????

And why would that code work in AV1 but more importantly why would it work in D* position.

Remember all I want to do is control the volume of the Harmon/Kardon when the toggle switch is in the D* position.....so I can change channels and control the volume without touching the togggle switch!!!

    Bob,

The DIRECTV remote is designed to be a "decent" solution for the 15 million or so DIRECTV subscribers. A lot of us here have universal remotes we like better. I think Drew2K has a Harmon/Kardon remote if I recall.

    Stuart--

Are you saying IT can't be done????

    IT being:

Remember all I want to do is control the volume of the Harmon/Kardon when the toggle switch is in the D* position.....so I can change channels on the HR20 and control the volume without touching the togggle switch!!!

I don't recall what the D* position is but you can setup the remote to control the volume & mute on an A/V receiver while all other controls work the HR20. Power will shut off the TV and HR20 but NOT the A/V receiver.

The D* position is the left position on the remote.

The toggle positions are (from left to right):

    D* AV1 AV2 TV

All I want to do is: when the toggle is in the D* position(so I can change channels on the HR20) I want to be able to change the volume on the Harmon/Kardon using the volume up/down control without touching the toggle again.

I don't care about the power.

    HELP!!!!!!!!!!
