That CBC feed of the Jets-Sabres looked like crap. The MSG HD feed was far superior.

The CBC feed of Red Wings -Maple Leafs looked great.

So why was one feed from CBC poor and another looked great ?

Don't know why the CBC feed didn't look good because it usually looks excellent, but allow me to commend MSG and their HD quality. I believe all the MSG channels broadcast 17 Mbps 1080i at the source, and they almost always look excellent.... I'm glad they carry my team (the Rangers).

The CBC feed of the Jets and Sabres was in WS SD. I had to switch over to MSG 638-1.

CBC does not have the resources available to televise all their games in HD. For the other games, sometimes they'll borrow the HD feed from another network and superimpose their coverage on top of it, but other times they will simply do widescreen SD. Their national late game (10PM ET) should always be in HD - it's the early games that can vary.

During the 2008-09 season we received both games of HNIC from CBC, pre- & post shows and "After Hours" all in HD on the NHL Network (US) (although initially there was some problems with the feed being turned off before "After Hours" started). What has changed?

Nothing has changed. CBC has never aired all of their games in HD. CBC has 3 HD trucks. On most weekends, one is with Toronto, one is with Montreal and one is at the late game. All other games are upconverted SD unless they borrow a feed. Americans don't know that because Ottawa and Winnipeg games aren't usually on D* or on NHLN. Talk to the folks in those cities, and you will hear them complain.

Usually, D* has the Habs or Leafs on 770 so we get a HD feed. For whatever reason, they chose Winnipeg this week, so you got an upconverted feed. There was nothing unusual about it from a Canadian standpoint.

The Saturday HD feeds of Hockey Night in Canada are great and I'm grateful for them. But let's wait and see how many feeds there are this week. There are some SD feeds in the online schedule and 1 HD feed. But let's wait and see what happens at game time.

Saturday night, the Leafs game was the primary 7PM feed and of course, it was in HD. Montreal was also in HD, as was Winnipeg. I wonder if HNIC uses the RDS french HD feeds and adds the english play by play? That would eliminate one truck. Maybe the Jets used the MSG feed, the same way? Of course the late feed was HD. Pretty much every HNIC feeds are now in HD. If they're not showing up on Directv, they're probably to blame.

I like to pass along good news too.

My "friends" at MSG have listened to our concerns and worked tirelessly with the league to find amicable solutions to the blackout issues bedeviling residents in upstate NY, Conn and Pennsylvania who cannot get some Rangers games even with Center Ice. Anyway, the rest or the season has been redone as it relates to broadcast scheduling and will be in the clear for those who subscribe to CI.

    Go Rangers!

Credit where credit is due here, DirecTV has been consistently showing one of the 7 PM games and the 10 pm games in HD since the end of October. This means that the weeks that the NHL Network takes a HNIC early game we have two CBC HNIC games to choose from. This is a major step forward.

Next Saturday HNIC is also doing a 3 PM game and the online schedule is now showing that on 770. So we will actually have access to 4 HNIC this Saturday. One at 3 two at 7 (including the one on the NHL Network) and then one at 10. Pretty good service and we should all be grateful to DirecTV for this.

Why just CI? Why not everyone, in the shared region?

I've heard back from DirecTV and there will be no Rogers Sportsnet feed either in SD or HD of the Leafs game tonight. Also the Leafs SD feed of the Friday game has also been dropped. They couldn't/wouldn't tell me why.

They are definitively going backwards on Canadian content during the week.

    Very discouraging.

I'm surprised you heard something so definitive at all. I still maintain it is because the NBA is now sucking up a lot of bandwidth. Hopefully at least they will give us Canadian HD when no other HD is available or for Canada v Canada games.

I agree.. I think because of the NBA starting late, that left extra bandwidth for more NHL CI games.
