This season I think that D* has done a very good job of showing almost all the HNIC games. The first game is usually on NHL network (which I hate and wish would go away). If NHL network does not show an early HNIC game, one is almost always shown on 770-1. If there is a HNIC game on NHL network, a second early game is almost always on 770-1. As stated above, the late game is almost always on 770-1 as well. Unfortunately, for unclear reasons, D* does not show them continuing meaning the between-game commentary is cut off. The first broadcast stops right after the game, and the second game starts right at 10 PM (ET).

Tonight, for example, NHL Network is showing the HNIC feed of Toronto at Ottawa, but on 770-1 is the HNIC feed of the Islanders at the Candiens. Then at 10 pm (ET), on 770-1 is the HNIC feed of Columbus at Vancouver. So, pretty complete coverage of HNIC's broadcasts.

2nd week in a row this has happened.

CBC has 2 regional early games.

NHLN picks up one and D* has not picked up the other.

I hate watching HNIC on the awful, terrible, NHL Network of pop -up advertising!

As long as NHL Network has exclusive rights to it, you will have to live with watching it on their network.

Correct...but that doesn't mean we have to like it. The NHL Network by its name should be dedicated to the NHL, but they butcher everything they touch. Distorted pictures, annoying crawls with out dated "news" and pop ups everywhere.

It was a great idea that went terribly wrong somewhere.

    Hi Loudo.

What's funny, if I recall correctly....

When NHLN launched we got the HNIC doubleheader in its entirety.

Then the lug nuts decided to dump the 10:00 game altogether, while saying there would be a focus on American teams for the 7:00 game.

Now that CI has picked up HNIC, NHLN has said, "Uh, oh, maybe hockey fans really want this after all".

The poorest excuse for a sports channel, ever...

Tweets scrolled during a game? Really? Are the producers 12 years old?

Several years ago when asked why the NHL Network wasn't carrying both HNIC games anymore, Bettman said their viewers wanted to watch NHL Live and catch up on all the games on Saturday nights instead of watching the second game.

NHLN could use some improvements as mentioned, but I still enjoy it and am glad it exists. And I enjoy the early HNIC game and the between period shows of the game. Although I'm one of the fans that Bettman is talking about, when it comes to the Saturday night line up. As an eastern conference fan, I prefer to see highlights of the early games on "NHL on the Fly" instead of a second game. Since its mainly western conference teams, I'm not real interested in the second game. Mainly concerned with games that affect my teams position in the standings. And if I want to see the second HNIC game, I can go to NHLCI to watch it. Also, since the NHL headquarters is in NYC, Bettman may be hearing the same thing from the local eastern conference fans.

And contrary to popular belief, not everyone that has NHLN, also subscribes to NHLCI. Most of us posting here do, but I would bet that's not true overall. So on the HNIC issue, maybe the NHL did realize fans really want to see the second game, so they added it to NHLCI to help boost sales of this package.

And for fans that don't have NHLCI, they may prefer NHL on the Fly over a second game, to get live "look ins" of games in progress. Similar to how some NFL fans like watching the NFL Red Zone channel. That way they aren't stuck with a game they really aren't interested in. And instead get to see some of the live action of the game they are interested in.

Yes they are twelve, really does anyone really care that some player thought his teammate had a great game, or that playing in the afternoon was great so he could go to a movie that night or whatever else??? And I do not get the crawl anyway and I also can not understand why anyone would want to watch highlights instead of a game. But what do I know, I am just a fan of the game.

Everyone has different things they enjoy, so I can understand why you feel the way you do. If I had all the time in the world just to watch NHL games maybe I would feel different, but unfortunately I do not. Watching 82 games of my favorite team in a season, takes up enough time. So highlights and analysis are my main way of seeing how other teams in the eastern conference are playing. And I'm a fan of my favorite team, so maybe that doesn't qualify for a fan of the game, in some peoples way of thinking. Anyone that is a fan of the game probably has NHLCI and can watch any game they want. So that leaves the NHLN and occasionally NBCSN for those that like highlights and analysis of the NHL. And maybe you just validated my point about eastern vs western conference fans. I might feel the same way if I was a Blackhawks fan.

Well, I may live near Chicago, but I am not a hawks fan, a different original six team. that said, the only game that was pulled was the second HNIC game on saturday, but that is available on D* in HD on 770-1 most weeks, and when NHL Network has a different game early saturday, the first HNIC game is also on 770-1, so the argument they made in the past about people preferring highlights is largely moot, at least for D* CI subs. That said, the crawl is obnoxious, and as I understand it with MLB EI you can watch a game on EI even when it is on MLB network so you are not forced to watch a feed other than the one you want. I hate the Pens feed, Bob Erry is very hard to listen to and I am no more happy listening to Bruins feeds either. I will not watch NHL Network except when it is the only way to watch I game I really want to see. It is a good idea gone horribly bad.

I really wish NHLN would let CI customers watch a different feed of the game they are showing, the crawl is horrible!!! Plus when they black people out of watching the games on different channels, some people apparently can't watch the game at all.

Yes, being a transplant myself, I shouldn't have made that assumption (despite it most likely being true of an actual Blackhawks Fan). I agree with you, I wish I had the option to watch my teams feed on NHLCI, when the game is on NHLN or VS. A few years back, when NHLCI didn't have as games in HD for my team, I was glad when the game was on NHLN or VS. Now that all my teams feeds are in HD on NHLCI, I dread when the game is on NHLN or VS. And if I was a Rangers fan, I would prefer the MSG feed any day, since they have one of the best HD pictures of all the networks.

Public Service Announcement: The less than beloved NHLN has changed their schedule to show NSH-PIT tonight instead of the previously scheduled WSH-PHL. For DVR users like myself, I absolutely hate when they do these quick notice schedule changes. Watching tonight with their crawl will be horrible, no doubt they will pick the Penguins feed to annoy me even further.

And I was about to bet the ranch that they were going to pick up the Rangers Pens in April, but I just looked and NBC Sports, nee VS, will instead, probably still going to have the irritating (I am polite here) Pens announcers.

Want another reason to hate the truly feckless NHL Network?

All year they have picked up saturday afternoon games from RSN's.

    This Saturday?

    There is one afternoon game:

    Calgary at Dallas - a H U G E game for both teams.

CI will not have it in HD, since they have never shown a Calgary HD feed and Dallas is televising OTA.

A perfect time for NHLN to do something, anything smart, yes???

    But, nooooooooooo.

    Of course it's not on.

Instead, they are gracing us with a replay of Friday's Jets v Caps game.

This is, hands down, the dumbest sports television channel E V E R.

Agreed.. Errey and Steigerwald are truly homers of Root Sports Pittsburgh. I don't think they can go 5 secs. without saying "Sid" or "Geno"... they must do so in their sleep as well.
