Frequently either Directv or the network will advertise an upcoming show that interests me. I would like to hit "record" or some custom button to schedule that particular episode for recording without having to go to the guide for scheduling. Is this possible on my HR34?

I know that what you're referring to was a Tivo feature, just not sure if it's still available on the Tivo STB's as I'm an HR user.

This is a TiVo feature called iPreview/Thumbs up and it is available on the THR-22 HD-DVR Tivo STB.

    TiVo probably holds a patent...

TiVo knows how to do a DVR.

Sadly, the HR-22 was the framework for the "new" TiVo box. We need a TiVo HR-34!

TiVo HR34 made me laugh, that's all.

Current TiVo THR22-100's cannot do whole home, why would they take a DVR intended as a server and make it into a TiVo?

They were just first to the patent lottery. One could argue that they blew an opportunity.
