I've always used the default of newest - oldest.
We very rarely save shows to watch over and over, and with no movie channels (save a current subscription to Showtime which was our anniversary gift), we're not really recording movies to save for later dates.
So, our recordings are generally "current". With 3 DVRs - and 2 kids - we don't keep RIGHT on top of them like we used to . With 1 DVR, if we didn't watch all our shows each week, we began to run out of space (somewhere between 6 and 10 shows all recorded HD-OTA, depending on the season, and what's been cancelled/added for that season).
Now, we may have a week or two stored up.
That said, I still have to watch them all chronologically. If we have 3 weeks of shows, I'll start with the Monday 3 weeks prior, and watch those shows, then onto Tuesday's shows for that week, and so on.
We won't watch 3 weeks worth of NCIS, then 3 weeks worth of CSI, or whatever.
It's got to be in order, so sorted by date is really the only sorting option that lends itself to our viewing methods.... odd as they may be.
Newest to Oldest.
But, with TB drives, I am starting to use A-Z on occasion to find something in particular. I guess I stick with Newest to Oldest as the default because I like to open the list and see what's new, as I have no idea when anything actually airs anymore.
I voted other... I have 5 DVRs and all are sorted differently.
If I don't know what I'd like to watch I sort A-Z to pick a movie or something. If I want to catch up on TV shows I sort newest on top so I know what was recorded recently.
A-Z you have to know what you're looking for. If you don't know what you're in the mood for that's hard to do.
I'm curious how richierich sorts his playlist. He uses 2TB drives.
Actually, if you don't know what you are in the mood for, don't you just look at all the titles until something strikes your fancy? Therefore, it doesn't really matter how it's sorted? Or said another way, A-Z may not make it easier, but certainly doesn't make it harder.
I keep mine sorted A-Z all the time, because it does help when I know what I want to see. (Except for it's unfortunate problem with the word "The" as the first word of the title.)
New to Old.
Yeah, but with A-Z shows are sorted in with movies. With recent on top it's 99% shows. If I don't know what show I'm in the mood for I certainly don't want to wade thru a bunch of movies.
I agree with RunnerFl. I have 6 DVRs (2TB on one and 1 TB on some of the others).
If I don't know what I'd like to watch I sort A-Z to pick a movie or something.
If I want to catch up on the Most Recent Recordings I sort newest on top so I know what was recorded recently. This is what I use most of the time.
However, if I want to Watch a Particular Music Recordings such as Soundstage I will sort A-Z and find that folder or music/concert recording.
I actually use my DVRs to record certain types of recordings. I use the 2 TB HR23-700 to record Just Sports. I use the other 1TB HR21-700 to record other stuff for my wife such as News, Dancing with the Stars, Entertainment Tonight.
I use the other DVRs upstairs to record other Special Type of Events such as The Travel Channel or The History Channel (Nostradamus, 2012, Edgar Cayce, etc). So I basically know which DVR will house what recordings.
I hope we will then be able to Select and Choose which DVRs are to be brought into the Mix as far as the PlayList is concerned. I may want just one DVR so I Select Local. Or I may want the two in my Den so I Select them. Or I want the Thre DVRs upstairs.
It depends upon what you want to do. If I want to Select a Particular Show A-Z would work best. If I just want to Surf thru most recently recorded shows then Newest to Oldest would work.
Always newest to oldest, especially during network tv season, I'm usually watching shows from 4-5 days ago, but its still the best way to keep up with weekly series and watch them in order.
new to old
I voted "other" as my playlist is generally too short to bother with sorting. I didn't even realize you could sort the darn thing!
Newest to oldest is the only one that makes sense for me. If I haven't watched a show within a few days, I probably won't ever watch it. This also automatically stores any shows, usually concerts, that I have chosen to save at the bottom of the list .
We did this already:
Can't we do it again, please???
But that's so 5 months ago...
Yea with ALL the new HD channels that were added over these last 5 months & all the shows to dvr on said channels maybe sorting habits changed.
Newest on top... just because it's the default and it's never been extremely important to change it.
Also... if someone wants to run a poll that was run in the past, that's ok (within reason).. we have a constantly changing user base. Please be polite.
