Others here know more but I would think you'd have to replace the power supply on your dvr to save those recordings. The drive is married to your dvr serial #. You cant change receivers and use the drive or copy it to a new one and hope to use it..

You got it wrong - it's written everywhere: records tied to one DVR. Period.

The only way to watch those recordings is on that particular DVR. Normally it is the hard drive that goes first, and in a fashion that you can recover some of the data.

Alas, when the DVR goes, perhaps because of the extra power draw of a larger hard drive, there isn't much an end user can do.

    Cheers,
    Tom

Yes, under the circumstances you describe, that should be no problem at all.

    Cheers,

yesterday my HR21-700 never came up after we lost power for a few minutes. When I plug it in, there is absolutely ZERO sound or lights so I suspect power supply. If it is the drive wouldnt I get any lights etc

Dont want to deviate this thread but its an attempt to bring over 200 hours of HD recordings back from the dead

Yeah, a dead drive rarely takes out the whole box. Normally you'll still get LEDs and a blue screen on the TV saying it fails the storage diagnostics.

    Cheers,
    Tom

Just to close the loop here I was never able to repair the file system on my cavalry 1gb drive. It's trashed. It lasted 3yrs. No need to trash on cavalry it worked great. Its the WD drive inside that failed.

A few weeks ago when the drive started failing I reverted back to a 750gb drive that was last used in 2008. All the updates were downloaded and it's been working fine..

Now I'm trying to copy it to a new 1gb. The gparted process worked fine. It said restore successful after 4.5hrs. However, After connecting the new drive it locks up the hr20 after approx 30-60min. (unresponsive except for hitting the reset button) It's done it twice after 2 seperate trys at copying it. Any ideas what I need to look at as the issue??

Thanks for this thread and the others that had similar information!

Yesterday, I was able to easily upgrade my 1TB external hard drive on my HR24-500 to a WD20EARS 2TB drive & Rosewill RX-358 enclosure.

I plan on doing the rest of my DVR's once New Egg can send me some working drives - I had to go through 3 of these just to get one that didn't have the click of death.

"Then I used the well-known process, using xfsdump/xfsrestore, for copying an entire drive - but I copied *from* the virgin drive *to* the corrupted drive, remembering that this process will overwrite system files, but will not touch any recordings. "

wish i would have known this trick when i was trying to salvage recordings from my corrupted disk a month ago! I'm so pissed. That drive is gone now.

Hey P. Smith. As always, thanks for the tips.
I like how you make me think for myself sometimes and figure things out..
However, for somebody like me who doesn't know some of these things - can you elaborate?

how do i find these log files?
    what am i looking for?
a little hint would be appreciated.
    thanks

usually I'm checking all those logs, just in case - you never know what location for important info chose those developers, actually each of that groups/individuals ...

For some reason the DVR won't format the new HD after I plug it in. It keeps coming up with an Error 14-983.

    I have a HR23-700.

Trying to install a Seagate Barracuda Green (ST320005N4A1AS) 2TB 5900 RPM.

Any thoughts on what to do or how to work around it? Thanks!
