I have the HR23. I only have one tv. Would I gain anything by upgrading to one of the newer models? I would like one that changed channels faster. Also maybe one that recorded more channels.

To record more channels, you'd need a genie, that requires SWM, which would be included in the install if you don't already have it. That has 5 tuners.

I have both the HR23 and HR24. The HR23 is significantly slower on channel changes, but it's a moot point since this one is in the bedroom and is mostly used as MRV to serve the living room HR24.

I'll upgrade to the Genie once one of these bites the dust.

Other than recording more channels, would I gain anything by upgrading to a newer model reciver?

    Going to a Genie:
    Record/watch more channels
    Picture in Picture
    Larger external HD support
    100 series links
    Genie Client/RVU support
    Faster than HR23

Going to HR24 (which DirecTV can't guarantee and doesn't consider an upgrade)
    Faster

Whether by mail or by installer, for the past couple years all I've received as a replacement is a 24. Have no idea why. And, I'm certainly not complaining.

As a replacement for a 24? You'll always get a 24 (for an equipment replacement)

In the last couple years I've replaced five 20-700s and a couple 21 series HRs and have always received an HR24.

Wow, consider yourself quite lucky! That's typical if you're having an installer come out but pretty rare if they are drop shipped. I love the 24s.

I am a little confused. Is the 24 faster at changing channels than the 23

    Yes.
I have one of each and the 24 is noticeably faster.

Presumably. you will find post where folks complaints that the HR24 is as slow as molasses while their older DVR works as "normal"

I can't say I remember seeing an HR21 or HR23 user saying that, maybe someone with a 20.

Sure, I jus haven't seen anyone say their hr21 is faster. Maybe I just haven't seen those posts.

And, for the most part, nobody has clearly stated what exactly is "slow" about any of them. Slow, sluggish, words of that ilk are comparative and therefore need to be compared to another device so we have a clear idea of what the poster means. If someone tells me that a 24 (any of them) is slower than a 22-100, I'd suggest something is very wrong with the 24.

If I had never had any DVR and acquired a properly working 21-700, I'd have nothing to compare it too and would be happy with it. Put it next to a 20-700 or a 24 and my opinion would quickly change.

All we hear are complaints and if we think that those complaints are indications of how every 24 works, we'd be very wrong. Again, let me say that I have no complaints (except for fan noise on the 24-100s) about the 24s as far as speed or sluggishness go.
