    I recently completed a self install of a slimeline and hr20/700. I can recieve some hd channels like 73-ESPNHD 70-HBOHD 72-ESPN2HD-75-TNTH 76-HDTH 79-HDNET.
But others like T101HD-101 TNNSHD-217 HBOHD-501 HBOWHD-504 MAXHD- 512 I get a gray screen that locks up my reciever for about 2-5 minutes. Are HBOHD-70 and HBOHD-501 on different transponders?
    here are my numbers:

I have VOD and some of the shows i download play fine but some have the gray screen. Could this be a codec problem with my dvr? I read somewhere that different hd channels use different mpeg codecs. Is the same true for VOD? I've been tweaking my aim and the transponders I get seem to have good numbers. Could it be a bad dvr?
Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Do you have a multiswitch or are you running lines straight from the dish?

Did you install the BBCs on each input to the HR20?

    Thanks for the fast response.
No multiswitch. about a 7 foot coax run straight from the dish, BBCs installed on both tuners.

No problem :) = just wanted to eliminate the very obvious and 'easy' problems.

Edit - saw that it's a slimline in 1st post.

The 70's channel numbers were recently migrated to 'alternate' channels, and I know the alternates were migrated to MPEG4 - I believe the originals are still MPEG2, but will be going away.
A pretty accurate mapping document is available here:
    http://www.dbstalk.com/forumdisplay.php?f=125

All of the other channels you mention are on the 103 satellite (according to the above document) - so you may well have either:
1 - one or more bad BBCs
    2 - a borked receiver

Shouldn't be an LNB - since you seem to have good signal strengths....

Did a system reset from setup menu and the hd channels came in for about 45 seconds hbohd-501 then maxhd-512 Then the picture froze but the audio kept on when i tried to rewind nothing happened, i then tried to change to another hd channel and got the gray screen. seems like a problem with the dvr or firmware

There are a bunch of test channels starting at 480

    480: 103 B-Band Odd Transponders (13V)
    481: 103 B-Band Even Transponders (18V)
    482: 99 B-Band Odd Transponders
    483: 99 B-Band Even Transponders

No picture/sound on these - but a blue message box at the bottom of the screen.
Try tuning those and report back the messages displayed.

channel 480 no blue message box just gray screen freeze up. channel 481 the screen went black with the dtv banner at the top staying up for about 15 seconds then the gray screen. channel 482 gray screen freeze up. channel 483 same thing channels 490-494 all come in with the blue message box.
I think I'm having a problem with mpeg-4 decoding. I downloaded from VOD some NBC hd Olympics content and got the gray screen on that. my firmware is 0x254. could it be the harddrive? although I'm able to record sd content and mpeg-2 hd content.

0x254 is the current national release software, so I don't think that's your problem.
    See here: http://www.redh.com/dtv/index.php?r=HR20

Hit MENU, go to the bottom (Parental/Favs/Setup), then choose System Setup, and the first option - Info and test. Scroll down a bit - what does it say for Dish Type ?

That's the right setup from what you've provided.

Pull the power plug from the back of the unit. Let it sit for 1/2 hour, then plug it back in and let it restart.

If it still does the same thing, I'd say it's time to call DirecTV - ask for a Technical CSR, and explain everything that's been done. They may want to do a service call, or you might get one that will just swap out the unit by sending you a replacement and a return shipping box.

tried unplugging the dvr for 1 hour rebooted and the mpeg-4 channels came in for about 2 hours. thought it was fixed but then the picture froze then the gray screen. i'm wondering if it is overheating. internal temp went up from 93 to 120. going to try a fan and see if i can keep the temp down for awhile and see if that helps.

My HR20 usually runs 125-127F so I doubt that’s it. My guess is that it’s a signal issue – either a bad tuner, bad LNB, bad cabling or bad BBC. You need to try to isolate it to a specific component.

First, isolate the tuners. Unfortunately, there is no on-screen info to tell you which tuner you are using. To know for sure, you have to disconnect the sat feed. Tune to a good station then disconnect the line for tuner #2 for a minute. If you are using tuner #2, the picture will drop. If not, then you are using tuner #1. Note which tuner you are currently using, then reconnect the sat feed.

Now we need to see which tuner(s) will (or won’t) correctly lock onto the HD signals. Press “record” and this will lock the current tuner (well call it tuner A) onto that channel. Now when you change channels, you are using tuner “B”. If you get a good signal on the HD channels on tuner B, press “record” and then press “Prev” to go back to Tuner “A” (BTW, this is the DLB workaround). Now, on tuner “A”, change to an HD channel and see how things are.

Basically, you now know if both tuners are failing on MPEG4 or just one. When you isolate which tuner, now it’s time to switch the sat feeds to see if the problem follows the tuner or the feed. If it follows the tuner (or if both fail), I’d say you need the DVR replaced. If not, then see which feed is bad and then alternate the BBC’s. If the problem follows one of the BBC’s, then you replace it. If it follows the wire, your next step is to see if it’s the physical cabling or the feed from the LNB. You’d do this by swapping the cable connection at the LNB. Again, the whole idea is to find out which component is the problem then get it fixed.

20 hours with the fan on temp never over 103 average 100 degrees. mpeg-4 channels coming in steady. it seems like the added load of mpeg-4 decoding is not possible with the processor running stressed at high temps/ sd and mpeg-2 decoding doesn't seem to put the presure on the cpu like mpeg-4 decoding. it seems i have a marginal unit that has thermal issues at a temp that most units run at standard.

Thanks dbmaven and rudeney for your timely responses and informed held.

Good job! That's a fairly unusual problem with that model receiver.
