I’ve read and read stuff about the HR20-100 and HR20-700 but I still don’t know which one is better? I know Costco has the 700 for $263 but from what I’ve read the 100 would be a better choice for the long run. I’m a new subscriber to D* and presume I would get the $100 rebate if I buy the IRD from Costco. I also need the OTA. I’ve been with E* for 10 years and just want to make sure I make the right decision. Thanks for the help.

There is little difference in the HR20-700 vs. the HR20-100. The feature set is the same. The HR20-700 systems have gone out of production, but last word has the HR20-100 systems still in production.

I'd say if you are ready to take the plunge, then either the HR20-100 or HR20-700 will be a great choice .. don't worry about picking between the two.

Out of Production? Is there something that replaces the HR20s? Should I wait?. I know the HR21 is newer but it doesn't have the OTA tuners. I like the HR20s because they have the two tuners and I'm only interested in OTA recording. Thanks for the update!

If you are ONLY interested in OTA recording, you will need an HR20 or possibly the HR10-250 (ebay). The HR10 cannot record/view the new MPEG4 channels and will ultimately be unable to receive any HD via the satellite. It will, however, continue to function as an OTA HD receiver for the foreseeable future.

The HR20-100 is better than the HR20-700 in my opinion in that it has coaxial digital audio out and better ventilation. Some people prefer the -700 because its support of the RF remote is better. The HR20-100 is, so we are told, still in production.

Thanks Doug and Steve for all the good information.

Doug I think the HR20 is the way to go. Has there been talk about discontinuing the OTA capability for the HR20?

Steve the -100 sounds a little more advanced but I need the RF remote capability. Do you know what I would be missing in the RF remote capabilities with the -100 vs. the -700? Can the -100 be requested when signing up for D*?

    Thanks,
    Jack

I think the 700 is the best unit, it is made by Pace not RCA.

The 700 just has optical audio (TOSLINK), the 100 has both optical and digital coax.

The HR20-100 supports the RF remote, but some people say that it doesn't work as well as the HR20-700. I have not tried this myself (as I have a full IR distribution system and have no need for it). The HR20-100 comes with a small whip antenna you plug in to the back, the HR20-700 has an internal antenna for the RF remote.

As texasbrit says, the HR20-100 has coax digital audio out in addition to optical, the HR20-700 has optical only. (The HR21-700, though, has both.)

well crap, anyone recommend me where to get a 100 from for a "decent' price, other than ugh-bay? seems like my local dealer only has the 700s, and I definitely need digicoax audio! :(

Are you sure the '700s' are HR20 and not HR21? If you don't need the OTA component, sbl has noted that the HR21-700 has both audio connections.

If you can't get a 100 try one of these or similar:

From what I have been reading the HR20(100/700) are in short supply. If you need OTA I would take what ever HR20 I could get my hands on and be happy I found one.

I know Costco has the HR20-700 in stock. I don't know if I need Coaxial Digital if I have Digital Fiber Optical connection but I do know I want OTA recording. Good luck in finding the -100.

Your correct sir! I went to Costco today and they were out of the HR20-700. I bet they had more than 50 last Friday. They do have the HR21 in stock now.

No problem Doug... I got mine over the weekend. I got the -700. I went there today to check on a patio set that my wife wanted me to wait until the price was right. I knew the price was right last week but it's too late now.
