But the problem is the same remote will work fine with my other receivers/DVR's.

Yep this is exactly what happened to mine as posted earlier.

Almost certainly a buffer issue. Pretty bad one too if it renders an unattended box useless.

Nope. The skip to tick and all the press and hold feature are the same way. I need to press the button for about 3 seconds let go and press the button again.

I remember this occurring with one of the R15 CE releases. It acted as VOS stated.

ProblemTwo Manual recurring recordings failed yesterday
Setup: HDMI to Samsung, WB68, with BBCs, Network enabled
    1st failure:
    Channel: 356 MSNBC
Start time: 5:59pm MT for 2:02 (Countdown with Keith Olbermann (with padding to catch the next show.
History entry: Canceled, only have a listing of the shows that would have recorded.

    Channel: 249 Com
Start Time: 8:59pm MT for 1:32 (Daily Show with Jon Stewart and Colbert Report and extra padding since Comedy Central likes to move the show a half hour.)
History entry: Canceled, only have a listing of the shows that would have recorded.

Both these recordings happened correctly on Friday, I think the first time they would have recorded with the unit in the present location.

    Cheers,
    Tom

Capmeister, our friends at DIRECTV would like some more information if possible:
    * Need the precise IP address
    * DNS gateway mask information for these

And if you could share the exact sequence you used if possible.

    Thanks,
    Tom

Doug, DIRECTV has asked if you can supply step by step instructions on how to reproduce.

    Thanks,
    Tom

I'll do it all again and write the notes here:

    After attaching the network cable...

    Menu > Help & Settings > Setup > Network > Connect Now

Got the message: "Your receiver is not connected to DIRECTV via the Internet."

I selected: Get Connected > Wired > Continue > Continue > Connect Now

Got the message: "A problem was detected. Press SELECT to find out more.

    IP Address: 169.254.4.109 OK
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0 OK
    Default Gateway: - -
    DNS: - -
    Network: Connected
    Internet: Not Connected"

I selected "Error Info" and selected "Try Again."

Same problem. I selected "Error Info" again and then "Advanced Setup."

I set the network info as detailed above:

    IP Address: 192.168.1.45
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
    DNS: 192.168.1.1

    It lists the MAC Address.

    I selected "Connect Now"

It checks status and then lists all my settings and says Network and Internet both are now connected.

My router is a D-Link DGL-4300 gaming router with gigabit ethernet.

My HR20 has been connected via Wireless to Ethernet wireless client (D-Link DGL-3420) and pulled DHCP with ease. As well, I currently have the DGL-3420 feeding it's network connection to a Netgear router which then gives ethernet connections to the HR20 and my HD-DVD player. Again, the HR20 has no problem pulling DHCP.

Just in case they think there's some weird network setting on my side, my PC pulls DHCP over its wired connection, my brother's PC, my laptop, and my brother's laptop all pull DHCP via wireless, and my day job is as a network server administrator. ;)

Now, here's the interesting part. The HR21 DID GET A DHCP IP address assigned. My router admin page says:

    DIRECTV-HR21-12218E192.168.1.164

So it's assigning it one, but the HR21 doesn't seem to know what to do with it. Just to see what would happen, so as to rule out that some weird IP address that the HR21 didn't like wasn't being assigned, I went into advanced setup and changed the HR21 to the .164 address. It connects fine.

    Anything else they might need?

I'm going to PM you with some info from my router.

    Dave

I can replicate the same conditions with an IP of 192.168.0.144 or 192.168.1.155 and the remainder fo the settings the same as Capmeister, using a DLink DI-634M 802.11G Router. with my HR21-700 model.

My 2 HR20-700's do not have this problem.

I can, if DirecTV thinks this is a D-Link issue, switch to my Netgear router and see if I get the same problem. (It will mean getting a 25 ft. lan cable, but I can do that if it will show some difference.)

If that were the case, I wonder why it would not at all affect the 2 HR20-700's I have, but only the HR21-700....

A problem the HR21's lan card has with D-link is all I can imagine. But I suspect if that's the case, it's a driver problem and can be fixed with a new driver.

    Status Report:

So far all is well. Had that non-record of Numbers last Friday and a lock up but it's been all good since.
    * Everything has recorded so far, no errors. Got about 15 series links and several "one offs" of hockey games and so forth
    * PQ is good. I need to do an A/B/C comparison with the HR20 and H21 but I'm not noticing anything "bad" so far. Component being used.
    * DD 5.1 works fine as does PCM stereo. Hooked up via coax digital to my A/V receiver.
    * Networked and running fine there (had to restart to get it to hop on the network). It see's my shared photos and music but I haven't had the time just yet to see how it's working. It's a function I just don't use much overall anyway. Now if we were to get video streaming that would be a heavily used function in my house.
    * Miss the "left" working like back. Hoping that makes it into an update soon.
    * Sunday Ticket interactive just too slow for my taste. Glad I have a non-DVR HD receiver to do Sunday Ticket. I think I'd go nuts using a DVR for this.

All in all good so far!

I've not tried Sunday Ticket interactive. I should do that. I don't have a non-DVR to compare with (at least not enabled right now). (Non DVRs are SILLY! :D)

I also miss the left as BACK function, and Hide SD duplicates.

I've not had any missed recordings (I have about 10 SL's) and several one-offs.

Remember the HR21 is a switch chipset and is not the same as the ethernet ports that are used on the HR20. These are separate beast with different characteristics by nature.

Are you using native on or are you locked to 1080i or 720p. The reason I ask is if you are using 720p over component you are the first one to report that it isnt blurry. Also, if you are just using 1080i look closely at the text when you have the guide up. Do you see a shadow to the right. It is most noticable when we have guide or menu up, but once you know what to look for it is noticable when watching certain things.

This is the same as with the HR-20 [I think].
When my HR20 scales the guide to 1080, text degrades. The same is true [with my HR21] for an SD program in zoom [I started a thread on this here], and when using my TV's scaler, it is much improved.
