Did you catch up to the "end"? I've actually seen this on the HR20 a number of times with the exact same scenario ... However, I could always just FF until eventually it jumped to the next program in the buffer and did the same thing. It would do this until I was within 90 minutes of the current time or the "normal" buffer rather than the super buffer.

After this morning's lock up session, I decide to just leave the unit in standby and cover the IR port so my wife wouldn't inadvertentaly turn it on. It's now about 3+ hours later and the yellow record light was on. I had a half hour recording set for 10:30. I tried to take the unit out of standby, but it wold not respond to the remote. It also would not rspond to an RBR. It not power off. Pulled the plug and waited for a minute and plugged it back in. The HR21 started to reboot, but stopped for 15 minutes on screeen 1 of 2 before I pulled the plug again. This reboot has also stalled on screen 1 of 2. System is now unplugged. I think the thermal shutdown hsa happened again. Leaving unplugged.

When I went to set up the network, it already had some info in it. When I selected reset to defaults the box locked up. After rebooting the network was reset to the defaults and I was able to get it networked.

While watching Showtime HD last night and TNT-HD this morning, I've noticed very slight audio drops (ever so often) that are not apparent on the HR-20 in the next room.

The HR-21 is not utilizing DD or a home theater receiver.

    Also...

While watching The Tonight Show on KCRA (MPEG4 HD Sacramento) audio video sync was a bit off. Changed channels to The Late Show on KOVR (MPEG4 HD Sacramento), audio sync issues continued.

My HR-20 in the next room did not exhibit the same issue when I went to check it.

Menu > Search > Title. The current channel plays with sound in the inset box. With the cursor positioned in the left column of the keyboard, press Left. The audio will now disappear and the only way to get it back is to change channels. This is 100% reproducible.

I managed to get the audio to disappear some other ways as well, but I didn't record them at the time. Audio connection is coaxial digital (with HDMI for video.)

Had another reboot. I was watching Gladiator on TNTHD and hit the Guide to see what was coming on at 9:00. I was able to go to the beginning of my locals in the Guide with video still playing in the corner. However, when I tried to page down, the GUI became unresponsive with video still playing in the window. RBR and restarting now.

I noticed the same thing on ESPN HD. I replayed it, to see if the dropouts were in the stream or just an error with the HR21. They were not in the replay, so it was just the HR21.

Same thing just happened, except instead of switching to CNN I switched to ESPN2 HD.

I was watching Amistad on TNTHD and went to the Guide. Once in the Guide, I hit Menu and the picture in the corner froze. Thinking perhaps I'd accidentally paused the program (there was no pause icon in the window however), I was able to exit back to the show. I hit Play but the picture remained frozen, though the progress bar appeared and showed a Play icon. I skipped back two or three times and the program resumed playing as if nothing had ever happened. I have not restarted since then.

ISSUE: Live TV on "active" tuner not buffering while Tuner 2 is recording and a previous recording is being played.

Tuned TV to ESPN2HD prior to watching a recording, non-active tuner was recording on ABC. While watching my recording I exited to Live TV and there was no buffer for ESPN2HD.

This happened again, but with a twist this time. The HR21 was on an XM channel, when a recording started on Discovery HD. When it tuned to channel 76, there was nothing but a black screen. As usual, menus and the guide worked fine. I decided to let it finish recording before I rebooted it. After the reboot, I attempted to play the recording. It was working just fine. I wanted to quickly skip through and see if all of the recording was OK, so I used the skip-to-tick function to jump 15 minutes. As soon as it jumped, the video locked up like in a previous bug I reported. Again, trick play worked fine.

I exited out of the recording, and attempted to watch live TV. MPEG2 SD channels work fine. 720p MPEG2 HD channels display in a jerky frame-dropping manner, while 1080i MPEG2 HD and all MPEG4 HD channels display a black screen. I am rebooting it again, but I'm too tired to check and see if watching the recording produces the same results again. I will give it another shot tomorrow.

Brought the box out of standby this morning and the active tuner was on IFC. This is odd because I haven't watched IFC in weeks at least and had nothing scheduled to record on that channel over night. In any event, I went to the Guide and selected the Today show from my NBC MPEG4 local WSMV and as soon as I pressed select, the picture disappeared. Front panel lights remained active but there was no signal to the TV. Not responsive to either front panel or remote. RBR and restarting now.

I was watching a recorded show when all of the sudden the screen went black and no sound. I tried hitting some buttons and nothing would happen. All of the sudden the trickplay bar showed up and it showed it was at the beginning of the recording and showed -:30 as the time into the program. I tried exiting and going back in and nothing would happen. Then I went to live tv and had BSOD. It would change channels to what ever I selected and the banner would change but no sound or picture. Had to reset the receiver.

After reset everything seems ok and it played past the whole program.

If you turn off the sound effects this issue goes away, at least it did for me.

Seems like the audio was dropping out every time it should "bong".

Issue: Picture Freeze and Sound Loss

What Happens: While watching YESH MPEG 4 live and using various menu functions; I hit hit exit multiple times to clear menu screens and lost sound. While sound is lost; if I hit exit again, the picture freezes. This issue occurs on every station (not limited to MPEG 4) and also when playing back recorded programs.

Repeatable: Yes; but not every time.

Remedy: Using either RW, Replay, or hitting Pause 2x brings back sound and unfreezes picture.

This is similar to the issue I reported above; except it can occur by just hitting exit.

I am going to do a menu reset now and report back whether it resolved the problem.

    UPDATE:

    Reset did not fix problem.

Turning Sound Effects off DOES fix the problem.

Runner reported above that its as if the HR21 wants to play a sound effect and cuts sound off.

You are 100% correct. I turned the sound effects off and both issues I listed above are now resolved.

    Thanks!

This time, skipping ahead 15 minutes worked, but when I skipped ahead to 30 minutes, it fell back into the same state as before. I assume that if I just watch the recording normally, it will work just fine. But after skipping through the show, it appears to be much more boring than I thought, so I'm not going to be watching the whole thing.

LOL, gotta love that. I have a bunch of recordings on my HR21 that I don't even know what they are or really even care. I was just grabbing stuff to record to test SD, Mpeg2, Mpeg4, etc.

Sorry guys; I don't think this is an issue; but I don't remember how long it should take to fully populate the guide. I am into about 14hrs and the following channels are not loaded past 8/8 2:00 AM.

    70
    71
    74
    75
    76
    78
    79

As you can see; all the above are HD. However, there is a mixture of SD channels that also aren't populated as well.
