I've had my HR21-700 for almost 3 years now. It's still ok, but it seems to be pretty sluggish lately.

DTV says I can upgrade to an HR24 for $75. Is it worth it? In addition to a new/bigger hard drive and a (hopefully...) performance boost, will I gain any additional features? Is it the exact same menu/guide/DVR systems?

And if I do upgrade, do I have any options when it comes to my current recordings? Or do I basically have to clean it out before the technician shows up?

I looking at doing an upgrade also.
How did you get them to give you that offer?

I was calling in for service to get my dish alignment checked.

At the end of the call I asked the lady what my options were for a possible DVR upgrade, and that's what she told me. Like I said, I'm just shy of 3 years with them, and I still have all of my original equipment.

Can't come up with a single reason NOT to take them up on it...but plenty why you'd likely like the change...

I have an HR20-700 and over the last few months video freeze up has become a problem.
Was going to call about an alignment check but a reset fixes the problem for a while so I don't think it is the dish and I think it is time for an upgrade.
    Thanks for the info.

anytime i have told that i was getting an "upgrade" i get a refurbished piece of junk, only thing i can figure out is because the times i have done this i have them ship it to me. my parents have done it twice and had the installer come to bring it and they get brand new ones out of the box...

I'd ask for an e-mail confirmation of the deal (citing the HR24), and then proceed.

The features really are the same, but it is fast. One thing some like is the fact that it's black, and fits in better with all the other black electronics that people use. Keep in mind there is the two year contract.

Probably means a new two year commitment.

No new features. Exact same menu/guide/system.

As you mentioned, you'll gain speed and a bigger HD.

If it were me, unless I was having lots of issues with the HR20, I probably wouldn't upgrade.

You have to clean it out.

    Good points.

Of course the other question you have to ask yourself is....

If his 3+ year old device bites the dust....will he get this same kind of deal when he needs it...

I'd go for the HR24 if you can get it Verfied in an Email from the Directv CSR.

Since you can get an HR24 from Amazon for $110, I'd say there's a chance.

I just looked that up. If I get it through Amazon, is that a purchase, or is it also a lease?

All DVRs bought from retail or online dealers are leases except HR21PRO's.

Having an HR21, you will be amazed at how fast the HR24 is over the HR21.
Just get the deal in writing.

But I wouldn't do the deal with turning in my HR20. Plenty fast and pretty darn good. Trying to hang on to it as long as possible.

NEVER heard of DirecTV doing that. Better check it out carefully and get it in writing because my guess is there is a "misunderstanding" from one side or the other. I've NEVER heard of DirecTV guaranteeing a specific model receiver. If they are doing it now that would be great ..... but still, get it in writing because you'll be getting a 2yr contract with WHATEVER you get.

Will be waiting for the "I was promised an HR24 but got a HR20" thread to go along with all the others.

Regardless of what the CSR told you, there is no way to guarantee a specific receiver (IE a HR-24).. there is even a chance that you would end up with the exact same receiver model you have currently. like the previous poster said, I'll be waiting for the "I was promised an HR24 but got a HR20" thread
