Yeah, the BCM7038 was covered in the HR20-700. I believe that it was out in the open on the HR20-100, though. Another poster sent me a dmesg file from the bootup messages (directly from the HDD) that gave an indication of what parts were involved on the HR20. I wouldn't suggest that any of you do that as it could be potentially intrusive to the HR21 HDD.

I would put good money on the BCM7401, though.

Thanks Doug, you gave me another software issue. Go look at help and tell me where you find MyVOD in the GUI (168).

And here are some quick exterior comparison shots.

Top unit is an HR20-100, Middle is HR21-700, bottom is HR20-700.

Another observation as far as differences...

The blue LED ring isn't like either the HR20-100 or HR20-700 in the fact that you can't use the left and right buttons to change the brightness. And it's pretty dim...

As for the other LED's, PWR and REC, they are as large as on the HR20-700 whereas the HR20-100 has pinholes that the LED's shine thru.

I measure 3" for height, if you include the feet.

On the HR20 the SAT-IN-1 connector was also labeled "(FTM)".

On the HR21, SATELLITE-IN-1 RF connector is also labeled "(SWM-2)".

SWM is the new term, so makes sense, but what's the deal with the "2"? Is it to denote how many channels are used on the SWM switch? Would single-tuner SWM-enabled receivers simply be labeled "SWM-1"?

    That would be my guess.

Good question. The HR20-100 is just labeled "SWM" no -1 or -2.

I just checked the pics of the H21-200 and it is labeled as "SWM-1" so you may be on to something Drew.

I guess it's really a smart thing to do with the SWM connections ... this way installers don't have to memorize how many channels each receiver type uses. Just a quick glance at the back panel, and you just need to have an SWM with that many channels open.

Can anyone comment on the noise level of HR21 compared to HR20-700? I can clearly hear the hard drive on HR20 when the TV is off, if the cabinet is open. Is HR21 as noisy? When and/or if I get mine, I want to put it in the bedroom.

I'll try to pay more attention tonight, but my first thought is that it's quieter than my R15. Hard to compare to my HR20 since that's in the living room. And if I'm in the living room, the tv is on, which drowns out any noise it might make.

I can't hear a thing from any of my HR20's or my HR21.

If I'd have to say one is any noisier than the others it's the HR20-700's because of the vents on top. But you have to get really close to hear mine.

    +1

I'd be slightly concerned that can be misconstrued meaning that it needs to be plugged into the SWM/FTM 2 port.

Curious for those using the HR21 how loud the HDD is?

I know a complaint of the HR20-700's was a loud drive. Is the 21 a little more "bedroom friendly"?

    Middle...
Mine's plenty quiet, but then again my HR20 is nearly silent too.
