LOS ANGELES (AP) - Hughes Electronics Corp. has changed the way it measures subscribers to its DirecTV satellite television service, a decision that shaved its base of paying customers by 360,000.

The company said this week that as of Jan. 1, it no longer counts as subscribers those customers who sign up for DirecTV and pay for equipment but have yet to activated the service.

The change shaved DirecTV's customer base of 10.7 million by 360,000 as of Dec. 31, 2001.
