Sometimes after reading followups I wonder if I should have posted what I did. Anyhow, to the installers credit I can say he was very polite, courteous, and proffessional in every manner even his knowledge may have been lacking.

He did exactly what I asked him to do after he told me that the SWM8 would not work in our area. This allowed me to hook up the SWM8 myself (well with a lot of help from you guys) and really enjoy some D last night.

And the SWM8 is the cat's meow for those of us that didn't have 2nd line drops to many inner walls in our houses where our TV's located.

Off subject, wow my wife and I are really impressed with all the new HD channels we are getting. We just didn't have enough time to check them all out but we sure had fun surfing the new ones last night.

What you state is absolutely fair. Howver instead of making up some BS about why it would not work the installer should simply state that the he wont install it becasue he has not been trained on it and does not want to be liable if he makes a mistake with it (adding that it's still not in general release if he knows that)

My main goal is to get rid of my phone line. If I can use a SWM8 in the method I propose (or any perceptually better method) I can do this by freeing up a coax from my current set up. When I built my house, "I was never going to use cable" , so my 4 RG6 runs were all I needed.

Can you guys take a look and see if my diagram makes sense. Also if any one sees a better method, I'm certainly open for suggestions.

Got my SWM8 yesterday (thanks, Dave!). :)

I'm planning to run it parallel with my Zinwell 16x8.
I have 4 splitters with one power-passing port (each).
Question: Am I correct that the power-passing ports should be connected to the SWM8, not the Zinwell?

I will run one DVR off the power inserter (in the same room as the switch closet), and split the signal off the other SWM port to connect 2 dvrs in other parts of the house.

You may want to switch the 8 way splitter for a 3 way to reduce losses. This probably isn't necessary, but rather just a good idea. You could also put a diplexer in front of the splitter, rather than 3 diplexers afterward. Doing it your way maximizes the effect of your 8 way distribution amp, but complicates your wiring. Also, the 2 way splitters directly before the HR20 units need to go, as a single line connects to the swm input to feed both inputs of the HR20.

Great. I know I have to connect the splitter outputs to the corresponding ports on the SWM & MS. Just waiting for some time at home when the family isn't watching TV so I can hook everything up.

Thanks again for all your help.

I've read varying reports on how well the OTA works through the port in the SWM, with many people saying separate diplexers will work better. What has been your experience?

I had better OTA numbers diplexing old school, before installing the SWM-8.

But, I still have plenty of signal, so I didn't go back and change it.

mine works great thru the swm8. the only way i would go back to seperate diplexors is if i lost alot of signal. it works fine though

Oh Yeah those splitters, that IS the point of the SWM isn't it... Good catch on the diplexor entry point.

I'm OK with diplexors. It would be nice to connect it directly to the SWM, but I don't want to climb up in my attic and introduce another penetration to the side of my house.

    Thanks for the help guys.

Just have a quick question and I realize the answer is probably obvious but isn't really occurring to me. What's the point of an OTA antenna if you're getting your local HD channels from the satellite?

Sub-channels (like local weather), adjacent market channels, PBS, sometimes the local channel feed from DirecTV is messed up.
