I ordered a esata drive from newegg that I thought would work, but I had to return it. Can someone could give me some compatible drives? Searching has left me more confused.

    thanks,
    ej

    (1TB, couldn't edit the title)

Buy an Antec MX-1 eSATA case and put the SATA HDD of your choice in it.

BTW, Weaknees is very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very...etc. overpriced.

    ej,

I am using an Hitachi Deskstar HDS721010KLA330 in a KingWin enclosure.

It has worked like a charm for a year and a half. Purchased from NewEgg.

I've edited the title as I couldn't stand trying to figure out how much a 111TB HDD was going to cost

I kept reading it as 1.11tb and was wondering who is making that. :)

Yep, get the Antec enclosure and put a WD green drive in there.

Can anyone give any insight into the noise produced by any enclosure/drive setups? It seems like there is some disagreement from the Newegg reviewers. I am pretty sensitive to idle noise in my setup, so I don't want to add any more than necessary.

Does anyone have any experience with the Samsung 1TB drives? I've actually fared better with Samsung drives than other manufacturers, so I am tempted to consider them if the noise and reliability are competitive.

    Short and sweet answer:
Never had a Samsung drive, but for a DVR go for reliability versus speed. Any HD is fast enough but the DVR will access it constantly 24/7. I like many others on these forums have great success with this drive.
You'll find the WD drive and Antec case a recurring theme throughout these forums and even in this thread for good reason.

Why do people like the antec enclosure so much?

Antec MX-1 seems to work for everyone across the spectrum of available DVR's. Some DVR's are quite twitchy about what enclosures will work with them, and the MX-1 seems to work for all of them.

    • Well made
    • Actively cools the hard drive
    • Comes with a compatible cable (this seems to be a real problem area)
    • It just works (I hear of lots of problems getting other setups to work with non-HR20-700 DVRs )
