Can I plug in an IR repeater in the back in my HR34 to extend the signal to the remote?

    Yes.

Usually it is easier to use RF but if you need IR, it can be done.

I use a Harmony remote to control my gear. I guess that I will need to get an RF/IR remote?

I have an external IR repeater with the receiver in an open space and some wired transmitters placed inside the cabinets where the equipment is.

I was using a Next Generation IR extender system with great success, but no longer need it.

I have a Logitech IR Extender that I haven't tried in years. It fail to work with the Time Warner box. Maybe I will go find it and try it with the HR34.
