is my 811 mpeg 4, and if not is there any current promo's to upgrade it?
No and yes. Think it's $50 to upgrade to either a 622 or non-DVR.
The $50 would probably get you a 211, the 622 would be more like $149 but there should be rebates.
Yeah sorry. It's $149 up front with $100 in rebates.
Actually it is simply no. 811 is MPEG-2 only.
And yes, upgrade promo is available. Those costs are correct for many, but not all. Depends on 'relationship' with Dish. But, they're not comparing apples to apples. Single-tuner, non-DVR vs dual-tuner, (up to) 3 channel DVR.
That's why I will take the upgrade route when physically possible.
The only thing stoping me from upgrading my 501 is the fee. I think I'll end up keeping the 501 until it dies and Dish cannot find a replacement or they force the upgrade by turning off Mpeg2.
I wonder how many people with old 501's and 508's would upgrade if they grandfathered the no DVR fee as a way to replace all the Mpeg2's with Mpeg4. Since most people (not all) own their 501/508's then Dish would at least get a rental fee. I just do not want to double whammie of replacing my "owned" 501 with a leased 622 and having to pay an additional $12. $6 I'll do but not $12.
Funny you should mention the 501.. I have a 501 on my account, and the main reason I still do is because it is part of my original DHA package. With the "old" warranty I get much better warranty service/costs than the new $5.99 per month option and it is all for the same cost of the lease fee on that 501 receiver basically. Any upgrade or dropping of that receiver would automatically put me into the newer plan.. so basically I keep the 501 on my account (I do watch it sometimes too) primarily to keep me under the old warranty plan.
I use my 501 in the basement with my 12+ year old 27" Toshiba. Picture looks great and I'm amazed at how rugged this old 501 is. My 622 is pretty sweet also. If the TV2 output was true HD then I would be set but alas it's only downconverted HD to SD
