Is getting a free HR worth it?

Long time loyal customer, 1995, and DTV is offering me a free HR. Can't think of a downside and would like to replace one of two HR20-100s. Any reason not to take them up on the offer? Would, of course, like the HR35, but I'm pretty sure that won't be coming, HR24 maybe.

Thanks for any info/experience with this.

You might not get an HR24, it would activate a two year contract. It could be anything from an HR20-HR24. Those are the two downsides. It definitely would not be an HR34. You could call and ask if they could give you credit on your account and get one from a reseller. You would need to pay the $400 and get some of it back spread across 6 months or so. No guarantees there, but might be worth a shot. You would need SWM for that to work.

You could also ask about credits and just get an HR24 from a reseller. Out of pocket cost would be $200, 2 year contract. If they allow the deal, then you know you'd get a brand new HR24.

What are the chances that you'd get another HR20? :)

Possible if the OTA box gets checked for sure.

I would hold off on the upgrade until January or February. You MAY be able to use the ugrade discount to get a HR34 for about 99.00. If you order a HR34 you are guaranteed to get it since it is in a HMC class not a HD DVR class

Most people who order a unit to replace an existing working unit of the same kind end up complaining about it.

I will let you know what I get on Tuesday. Like you I have been with them since 95, and got the same offer. I'm optimistic about an HR24 since they are not shipping it to me as usual. They are rolling a truck.

I got the same offer and I read it as a free "additional" receiver, not a replacement for a working DVR. Why would they send another HR to replace an HR? They are hoping to increase revenue.

I'm sure that DIRECTV would like it to be an additional receiver and in case revenue. However, there is nothing to prevent him deactivating a receiver that he currently has, effectively replacing it.

However, if he gets a refurbished DVR that is not better than his current ones, which is entirely possible, then it is a pointless swap.

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions and observations. Never occurred to me that it could be a HR20. Having no real reason to go for it I'll be passing on this and hope that at some point in the future I can negotiate a deal on a 35. Once again it is a case of rolling the dice, hoping to make your point, but seven out with a less than desirable product.

    Thanks again.

Just to clarify, its an hr34, not hr35. And I think mid feb is when you should try getting one, based on what is being said right now. That's when I am planning on calling. :)

I ended up with an HR24-100. Brand spanking new!

HR20 what if you have MRV or 3D? That does not work with it?

Hr20 works fine with mrv. I have four of them. It's the h20 that doesn't do mrv. 3d though, like you said, is a no go on an hr20.

There is only one sure way to get a free HR24-That is to take D* up on the free offer and send a tech out to install it and go over your system to make sure it is up to par.

When the Tech arrives or calls ahead you can ask if he has a HR24 and he most likely will.

The second way NOT free is to order one from a retail dealer like solid signal or Amazon and you will get what your ordered.

    Anything shipped or ordered from D* will be anything other than a HR24 -90% a HR21 or 50% hr22 .

Why not have your system checked out and have the installer bring you a HR24 it's at least worth the effort.
