Also my other question is I have seen numerous bad reviews for this new direct tv hd receiver... Ive heard alot of locking up , freezing and people having to go through 3 or 4 swap outs.. Is this receiver better or worse than the hughes hd tivo receiver that I currently have...
Ive heard alot of problems with this new direct tv hd dvr.. I currently called today and ordered my upgrade they told me tta I had to commit for 2 years.... I am moving my older hughes hd tivo to the bed room for the time beeing.... I would hate to have a faulty direct tv hd dvr...
I got my HR20 and 5-LNB dish for free (including free dish install), but I wonder if that's because I was replacing an HR10-250 that bit the dust. I'm an "A-List" so that may not have hurt, either.
The TIVO HR10-250 has a valuable feature that the HR20 does not--a reliable recording feature. Since I've owned the HR10-250, I've had no trouble at all. The HR20 is prone to freeze ups, and even loses the volume if it goes into standby on an MPEG 2 Channel with my Sony LCD. Even after all of the software "fixes" since last September, the HR20 still does not function properly.
Directv made a big mistake abandoning the reliable TIVO.
Have had my HR20 since Sept 06 Freeze-ups = 0 and missed recordings = 1 because of a guide issue and always put mine into standby with no issues.
I am not saying there are not users out there with these issues as I know there are but there are plenty of users that have not experienced these problems also.
Remember with the commitment an HR20 costs the average D subscriber about $2,000 (avg bill of 75/month and 300 for the HR20)...people should know there are potential problems and missing features beforehand.
I don't think that's really a fair statement. If you want anything from DirecTV, it costs you two years' commitment, most of which is the service (at $75/mo, it's $1,800 for the service). When I left Comcast, I had to commit for two years and pay $100--for a TiVo. I certainly didn't view that as a charge of $2,000 for the DirecTivo.
Having said that, certainly people should be aware of the potential problems.

I guess I don't see where I overstated anything or hid anything...I put down the cost of the monthly service. It's a lot of money to lease a box/service. Competitive services aren't much cheaper but, for the most part, they don't have 2-year mandatory commitment (Dish may).
I would imagine the ones that are getting those deals are "A" list customers who
have not upgraded in a while and carry the more expensive packages. The things that a Directv subscriber must consider is:How long have I been a customer,When
was the last time I upgraded?.Do I pay my bill on time,What package(s) do I subscribe to?.I believe when you take all those into consideration you will understand why certain subscribers are offered which deals, because believe me Directv definately takes all that into consideration when offering deals.
The one problem I have with the HR20 is the fast forward seems very poor in relation to my experience with the H10 Tivo. It is nearly impossible to stop without a considerable amount of lag. I've gotten to the point where I have to ff on x1 or x2 and basically watch the commercial or miss about 20-30 seconds of a recording after returning to play on faster ff speeds. The Tivo seemed very smooth in comparison.
We're very similar in our programming and setup. Where we're different is that I have the Sports Pack and I've never had Showtime. I've been with D* for around 10 years.
I still wonder if my HR10 going belly-up had more than a little to do with it.
You may just try back later to get a different rep. They may keep notes about your call so keep that in mind.
I am almost the same, except I only have one mirror. Never missed a payment (autopay from beginning). Not enough for me. I paid $99. I am not complaining. I am only curious why I have only 3 stars.
R U referring to mpeg4 trickplay or mpeg2 trickplay? Big difference, and everyone is still trying to compare it to how their beloved Tvios work. Nobody has gotten mpeg4 trickplay down yet...
This whole discussion really comes down to one issue. If the satellite launches go as planned (never a sure thing) and you want the new HD stuff then you have little choice but to use the HR20 at the moment.
Better or worse it doesn't matter. If you don't want the HD then there's probably little reason to move to the HR20.
is there any chance that direct tv will bring in a new box by next year one that acts more like a tivo
