Leased receiver dead (do I have to pay for it?)

    Do I have to pay for a leased receiver that died? I do not want a replacement I just want to send it back. Anyone know?

    Call and tell them and they deactivate it and send you a box to return it. Well maybe. Depends out the receiver. Either way you won't need to pay.

    I called and they said I don't have to pay for it. Now I am confused. They are offering a replacement without a commitment. Does that sound right?

    That's the normal procedure, replacing a bad receiver doesn't change your commitment.

    Be sure to keep your eye on them, lots of time they have one of those pesky "computer glitches" and you end up with two years tacked on...

    When you call to activate it make sure to talk to the access card department, and make sure they realize it is a replacement for a dead reciever. They are much better about making sure a new commitment is not started accidentally.

    If a new commitment is started accidentally it usually just takes an email or call and you can get it straightened out. The sooner the better though.

    When they replaced my receiver in late May they had instructions in with it and a Direct number to the Activation Department.

    Make sure you drop off the old receiver somewhere (like a post office) where you can get a receipt. Many people, including myself, have had to prove they returned the receiver after DirecTV charged our accouonts for a few hundred bucks.

    they will investigate the reason of ... and will hit you with a fee if you did something inappropriate to it

    What model was it that died? There's a very good chance they do not want it back, and you will get no label to return it.

    refuse to use the prepaid since tracking and receipts are next to impossible, I always use FedEx on my dime, lot cheaper then wasting time fighting with them for a "non-return" that was shipped back

    proposing to pay for dead box return (hefty fine using fedex :down:) is not wise
    the company took from you "pre-lease" fee and other "nickle-dime" fees
    perhaps you money flow is very high and you don't count your money ... well, not too many have same luxury

    Don't forget that whether they want your old receiver back or not you will get billed $20 for "shipping and handling" to replace your leased receiver. This isn't really out of line but, of course, cable charges NOTHING for replacing defective "boxes" and sometimes even sends someone out to do it.

    I had to ship a light box last week that didn't even weigh a pound and it cost $16. When I ship prepaid I just tear off the part of the label that we're supposed to keep then take it to my local mailing store and they give me the tracking no. Never had a problem and I've sent back a fair number.

    Certainly not true unless things have changed in the last two years since I switched to FiOS. I never had any problem returning items to DirecTV using their boxes and shipping labels. The only problem I ever had was when a tech physically took the malfunctioning box and apparently did not report its return to DirecTV. That took a few months to sort out.
