"Too bad we can't get religion, communism, taxes, and pot all together in a never ending thread! Who'd have time to watch TV anymore?"

    No, it would end. Eventually:)

Here's where I get confused. On this thread, as in my life's experiences, most people seem to be strongly in favor or legalization and taxation of marijuana.

So why don't we put politicians in office who will do our biding?

And if I see one more commercial that suggests that by smoking a joint I'm supporting terrorism I'll puke. And just for the record ..... I'm not a drug user (cept my booze of course).

I heard some reliable reports that there are some health benefits
from something in it but I forget the details. I haven't used it but I assume it can't be any worst than booze. I guess booze is the worst since it affects more organs than any other drugs.

Since the pharmaceutical companies can't patent it I assume it will never be widely used or legalized.
I'm against the government getting any more tax money, period!
I don't want to see anything ever heavily taxed again.

brmann, life isn't that simple. It's all about big business needing to change. Phillip Morris or another tobacco company (or possibly an alcohol company) would likely have any congessman in favor of marijuana legalization assasinated. It's the same reason we've never had a black or female president. And it's very sad:(

Rage, marijuana can help stabalize intraocular pressure (high IOP is the cause of glaucoma - optic nerve damage). Marijuana is relatively harmless as mind-altering drugs go. Safer (and likely more effective:) ) than most antidepressants. The danger being the risk of cancer, but it's not a carcinogen in and of itself AFAIK, but all smoke contains carcinogenic byproducts of combustion to some extent. This can be avoided by using methods other than smoking to consume marijuana.

    Mark,

Other things too but my mind is blank about it. I must be getting old.

No Rage, I really doubt that anybody has claimed marijuana has other benefits.

Okay, I'm sure potheads have claimed it, but I doubt anything other than IOP and anti-depressant claims are TRUE!

Republicans cannot come out in favor of legalizing marijuana because their Christian Right base would crucify them. Democrats cannot come out in favor of legalizing marijuana because they would be blasted about being "soft on drugs" if they did. As we saw in the last election the margins by which candidates win or lose can be so slim that the priority is not to do the right thing, but to not make anyone mad.

I don't think it has much to do with Christianity. Tobacco is also wrong according to the Bible, as are most modern medicines (the same parts of the Bible making marijuana bad also prevent people from using other antidepressants), yet republicans support those things.

Mark, not that I think tobacco is good for you, but where do you find either tobacco or marijuana mentioned in the Bible? Not to mention, where does it say taking a modern medicine is bad?

    Mark:

The controlled medical community isn't going to tell you that it has health benefits if they can't patent it and make a killing off it. Don't be so gullible.

    Bogy,

I think I can answer that but I'll let Mark do so since he questions others all the time.

Yeah, Mark, where does it say that?

Romans 12:1-2; Lev. 10:8-11. Everything is covered in Romans, Alcohol in Leviticus.

Mark, Lev. 10:8-11 says not to drink before you go to church, especially if you are planning to lead the worship. Romans 12:1-2 says to present your body as a living sacrifice. What does that have to do with taking medicine? If my body is sick, with an illness that has devastated what God inteads for a healthy body to be, why would taking a medication which would return my body to health be a bad thing? Try again.

More generally, Lev 10:8-11 tells you not to drink. And to present out body as a living sacrafice it should be as free as possible from drugs that contaminate it.

BTW Mark, are you familiar with this passage:
1Ti 5:23 "No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments." Why that sounds like Paul is recomending drinking an alchoholic beverage.

How do you know he isn't actually refering to unfermented grape juice in the original text?
