Wow what kind of furniture was it I wonder? It had to have been pretty heavy. I guess it depends on how big she was.

If everyone owned a 52 inch plasma flat screen this wouldn't happen, you cant lay your remote on the top of it.

Nothing to laugh about here, proper childproofing is hard, it's so difficult to imagine what a child will see as a ladder, beverage, snack, or toy.

I was in Wal-Mart earlier this week, and I saw a notice about a defective TV stand which would topple over if one of the screws wasn't tightened properly.

It can also happen with clothing drawers / dressers in their rooms. It's usually a good idea to screw the back of furniture into the wall so it won't tip if it's in children's rooms.

TVs (and furniture) toppling over onto children is a more common thing than most realize. The manufacturers of TVs and furniture are actually very aware of it; many warn about it while some even provide features or devices to secure the product. The problem is that parents are not fully aware of it or ignore the mfr. suggestions and forget that children will do things that are difficult to imagine. The results are often tragic.

My kids are older and know better than to climb on furniture but when my son was little I bought those Velcro straps at home depot and they were surprisingly durable and if installed correctly it is difficult to pull away from the wall. I keep them on now cuz I live in Cali, if the fires don’t get you the earthquakes will.

A dear friend had a similar accident just a few weeks ago. Her toddler was killed when the TV and stand came down on her. Apparently the baby was trying to climb up. Mom had left the child at home with the babysitter. Tragic.
