There is something weird regarding the local sports channels in HD that I'm quite curious about.

Whenever I am watching the games in HD, they come in on channel 96. But the people on the channel announce to the viewers in the Miami area that they can EITHER watch the game in HD on channel 96 and/or 97 on DirecTV. You can see the Sun Sports website listing the DirecTV channels as being Channel 96 or 97 by clicking http://www.sunsportstv.com/hdtv_programs.jhtml?method=listSeparate&hdtv_programs.team=Miami HEAT

I don't get channel 97 AT ALL. It's not in my guide and I can't tune into it at all. I tried setting my receiver (which uses the 5 LNB dish) to the 3 LNB to see if channel 97 would appear, but it did not.

This is not a big deal, but I just find it interesting and curious that they would announce channel 97 throughout yet I don't know who can see the Heat games on that channel.

I may have to look berfore I put my foot in my mouth. But where I live 95,96, and 97 don't have locals sports on those channels. I thought those were just special events channels.

95 is the special events channel. It's MPEG2 and available to all.

96 and 97 are for local RSN's in HD and are MPEG4 and available only with the 5LNB dish and of course either an H20 or HR20.
The reason they say 96 *or* 97 as it could be either/or, depending on your market. If you're getting it on 96 then they will mostly be there. I personally have 96 and 97 in my guide, just in case.

youll catch most hd broadcasts of heat and panthers on 95 or 96. the problem is it is not always shown in guide till the last moments. Interestingly, if you get mlb ticket alot of yankee games are on 95 in HD.

    Enjoy

i got in september a number of yankee games on 95 having mlb ticket. I am getting occasional hockey games also and i dont subscribe this year to nhl tkt (ie watched detroit v columbus on 95 last night)

Wouldnt it be great if you subscribed to mlb youd get all games broadcast in HD actually in HD? ie every yankee game is broadcast locally in NY in HD i believe.... probably limited by number of hd channels available.....

Yeah, it appears that most (if not all) YES games are in HD. It also seems that many Rangers games in MSG are in HD, although no sure who can get these if you live outside NYC. Is it only an occasional thing and it will be a few channels in the 90s?

Maybe with the new sats going up in 2007 we'll get regional HD sports. Like you guys said, right now it's just the occasional game on 95.

You'll only see MSG HD games on cable. MSG is owned by Cablevision and they wont farm out the signal. They want you to buy their cable service you see. ;)

I am in the NYC DMA (Central Jersey) and I cannot seem to tune in 96-97. I get 95 and 98 (95 seems to bring in various networks in HD, some nights it's a hockey game on VS, another night it is hoops on NBATV, etc.). Since, as someone has stated, Cablevision doesn't farm out their signals to D* (heard a rumor that this might happen soon), and there's no HD broadcasts on YES or SNY right now, is that why I cannot tune in those channels, and will once the season starts?

    Two other related questions:

    1) Does the HR20 support Interactive YES? And if so, is that on HD as well as SD? My H10 (SD box) supports it on my other TVs and it's awesome.

    2) Is there a list of the various HD channels that D* has or pulls from (such as the broadcasts on Ch. 95 which show games from various networks). The channel lists on D* don't seem to have that info. It would be nice to be able to see that Ch 96 always has YES, etc.

I'm wondering whether you have an HR20 box...if not, I don't think you will be able to view chan. 96-97. You will be limited to 95.

    1) The HR20 supports interactive YES, but only SD. Kind of lame, but thats how it is currently.

    2) I'm not sure if such a list is available.

In my limited experience (the last two weeks), 95 has the NFL Network games, and last night was an NBA TV game (Lakers-Bulls). National games, not regionals. Others people have noticed recently?

I have an HR20. Just got it this past Friday. I have been trying to find as much HD as I can find. I'm thinking the channels will probably show up in the spring when the local RSNs have content. At least that's my hope.

Maybe this spring we'll get Interactive YES with HD. You just never know :)

95 is the "special events" HD channel, in MPEG2. It gets the programming you noted, as well as most Versus NHL HD games. It also gets a few other games per week from various regional sports networks (for those you subscribe to the appropriate "league pass.") During baseball season it is heavily weighted with Yankees games from YES. It's guide data is very frequently a mess...sometimes updating itself only minutes before a game appears.

96 (and/or 97) are in MPEG4-only, and won't be seen by those with HR10's or other older receivers/DVRs. They are for HD games from your local RSN (if you do, in fact, receive one -- not everyone does).
