I believe that this was the intent of the new legislation as well..to level the playing field of access to everyday services we all take for granted.

ATMs themselves would change slightly, and also be updated with audio hardware and software.

A user would speak their needs - like withdraw money. The physical locations of them may also change, such as being located on passenger sides of driver-thru areas at banks. Much of all that has not been ironed out.

The point is that the way the regulation reads today...and consumer-facing access point (websites too), would require the ability of any disabled individual to gain access, which in a number of cases, is not available today to them.

I can see this being a huge issue for DirecTV. They can't provide you a certain model STB and if this goes into effect, then what will they do if they can't make their current boxes compliant via a software update?

If they have to create a new STB it will have to go to all new customers and I would guess existing customers who add new boxes.

What then happens to all the older boxes they are currently refurbishing and using? Will they only be allowed for replacements?

And what about customers like TomCat's mom who currently have DirecTV, but need one of the new boxes. Will DirecTV be able to provide one to an existing customer who needs it without a hassle?

I think it's fair to assume that this new regulation will impact many things. TomCat's post is correct that it might spawn changes with devices at DirecTV as well...we'll just have to see what those actually turn out to be.

I suspect that DirecTV will have some technical troubles. They are still (hopefully) working on trouble they introduced in October to the HR24-500s and the remote response/performance troubles on older models for years. They will be better off using new boxes specially designed for this rather than trying to make changes to what must be a kluge of code on the current boxes… I can’t imagine that an HR22 can handle any more ‘updates’ without becoming flat out unusable.

And let’s face it. DirecTV CAN control what model goes to what subscriber – they have just decided not to do so in order to make more $$$.

Hopefully they are already working on this and all will go well.

And on the political soap box…. Too bad these requirements are just now being put into play. Hopefully as the republicans take over the house in January and the presidency in a couple of years (maybe even the senate) these things are not turned back.

That's all being discussed in another thread, and was addressed in the latest National release being rolled out at this time.

As for what the HR24's can do....they can do much more than what they do today...there's still untapped potential, as I suspect we'll see in 2011.

Yep - just using their troubles with 'updates' as a reason to move to dedicated receivers for this and not try to 'update' the current line.

I have no doubt there is untapped potential inteh HR24s - they are much quicker than the HR21/22/23s (you know - the unfast ones). I hope that DirecTV will not keep the HR24s crippled to what the older receivers can handle but we shall see.
