Watched the first Zen last night. I liked it. Rufus Sewell does a good job. And his character Aurielo Zen, a Venitian who is a detective in Rome is a good one. I think it's interesting that BBC makes a few programs based on novels about cops in other countries. I enjoyed Wallander very much also.

ps: I tried to edit the title. I know it's Masterpiece and not 2 words. But I'm old and fatfingered :p

I only found out about the series just before the second one was to air. I recorded the last 2 but I could not find a replay of the first one. And we have 3 PBS stations!! But none of them were replaying that first airing. I have not watched them yet.

I enjoy the first two Zens. Haven't watched the last one yet. It's especially nice to see Caterina Murino on-screen again. :) Last time I saw here was in Casino Royale.

One thing I don't understand is why, if almost everyone playing an Italian has a British accent, a couple of characters (Caterina, Zen's mom, et al.) have an Italian accent? :scratchin

Masterpiece Mysteries has been one of our favorites for years. The shows are much better than the crime procedurals on commercial networks. . "Inspector Lewis: Series IV" premieres Sundays, September 4, 18, 25 and October 9, 2011. This is our favorite of the different ones this year, although we loved "Wallendar" starring Kenneth Branagh in previous years. It sort of set us up to like the feel of "The Killing" on AMC.

Masterpiece Classic and Masterpiece Contemporary also offer excellent shows, though not always to everyone's taste.

Certainly some of the best writing, directing, acting, cinematography, etc., on TV can be seen in the Masterpiece series. Now if Dish would just get me my KQED in HD....

Watched the "Ratking" episode last night. Left us looking forward to a Zen Series II.

Unfortunately Michael Dibdin, who created the Aurelio Zen character, passed away in 2007 at the young age of 60 (obit). He wrote 11 books in the Zen series.

My wife and I also enjoy Masterpiece shows with a lot of other great shows on at same time especially on premium channels.I have to arrange network shows such as PBS higher ranking on my to do list so they record no matter what. This leaves other series on cable or premium channels repeat everything multiple times to be recorded on next available time without conflict .Some time it takes a little adjusting of recordings but, worth the reward of great viewing.

I really, REALLY wanted to like Zen. I like Rufus Sewell, and have since The Illusionist, A Knight's Tale, Dark City, and others. unfortunately, with all the back-door politics, and corruption, there were no characters to like except for Zen himself, AND given the environment of police evidence tampering and so on, it seems to strain credibility to think that he had made it that far without being corrupt himself.

Unfortuately for you, there won't be another series. BBC has said that, so don't hold your breath. Sorry.

I thought that Caterina Murino was a model trying to act. I thought the same thing when I saw her in Casino Royale, but, IMDB shows that she has a lot of acting credits, so maybe it's the way she has been directed that I don't like.

Can't stand mysteries, just waiting for the real deal to come back on Masterpiece: The awesome period dramas. And waiting...and waiting...

These ^&*&^%$# mysteries seem to be eating up Masterpiece lately, hardly any real dramas left. Undoubtedly the cost is the driver here. The Brits are in major austerity mode, and budget-wracked BBC period dramas are off the radar.

I really enjoy the mysteries. It's the contemporary stories that I just skip.

Oh, and not to be too much of a bother, but olguy, it's MASTERPIECE, not MASTER PIECE.

You didn't read the ps in my OP, did you? I caught that just as I clicked submit and immediately tried to edit the subject but couldn't.

We have discovered Masterpiece via netflix and amazon. I noticied that Amazon was asking for $50 for a year worth of Midsomer Murders that were 3-years old. Love this brit series but not that much.

Been catching the latest series with a young Morse.

Luv the way they have practically every character with a fag in their fingers.
