    That's good;

Then you won't need a dish or LNB swap out and the installer may not need to climb up to the dish, assuming no alignment problems with it of course.

While virtually all of academic interest nowadays since customers still using the old AT-9 is pretty rare now.

Nevertheless it will work with a SWiM-8 or -16 external multiswitch as well.

Oh yeah I'm familiar with that SS article, but its not accurate there.

The AT-9 is (or mostly today, "was") functionally equivalent to the Slimline-5 with a conventional 4 output LNB. Therefore like the SL-5, it may be used with a SWIM-8 or -16 MS.

In fact, you can even remove the 110/119 sidecar and the AT-9 will "almost" act like a SL-3, again with a conventional four output LNB.

The difference here though, is you must connect the AT-9 through a SWiM switch if the sidecar is removed as it will no longer work correctly in legacy mode without the sidecar.

SS is very informative on DIRECTV technical issues and even getting better with their various white papers, blogs, and discussion forums there, but they've still got some inaccuracies.

As do we all I guess ... :)

Since all I signed up for was the installation of Whole Home DVR and two additional HD receivers, what can I or should I expect from the installer if I don't have any communication with him before the install? I am concerned that the installer won't have all of the necessary accessories to complete my the installation of my HR44.

as long as the work order was properly put together, it will show everything that he'll need for the install.
If the peak of the roof beyond reach of the ladder is the only option for dish placement, there are still options. Those options usually involve rescheduling so that a supervisor can come out with ropes and harnesses, but they're still options.

There will be no mention of the HR44 on the work order because I bought it myself. All that should be on the work order is the installation of Whole Home DVR including two new receivers. My concern is that the dish, LNB or multiswitch will need to be changed out and the installer won't have any of them on the truck. I am assuming that if he does have them on the truck, he will install them for a small fee.

a customer should NEVER have to pay for "supporting hardware" if the work order comes from DirecTV and is being used to support what ever receivers are on the account and on the premises the account is under. these items can easily be added to the work order.

When I called to 'get the deal' and set up the installation, I asked if they could install my HR44 in addition to the receivers included in 'the deal'. They said no because I didn't buy it directly from them it couldn't be included in the install. They went on to say that maybe the installer would do it for a fee. My understanding is that there is a slight difference in the installation of a Genie or Whole Home DVR, with the Genie install being a bit more involved.

I have included a pic of my multiswitch which will probably have to be changed.

Your switch will have to be replaced. Whole home (supported mode which is what DirecTV will install) requires SWM, as does the HR44. They can't do that through the switch you have.

If they don't know about the HR44, that's 5 tuners that have to be supported in addition to whatever you already have. If the tuner count exceeds 8, then it requires an SWM16 which may well not be available if the installer coming out isn't aware of the HR44 (which he won't be).

Only because of the need for SWM. The supported Whole Home service, even without a Genie requires it as well. Once the system is on SWM, installing a Genie is just plugging it in, putting in the access card and activating just like a normal DVR.

Thanks! Great reply. Directv already knows that I have at least 12 tuners that need a home and hopefully that a SWM16 is needed because I have had 6 machines for quite some time. I have to assume that they will send SWM16 hardware with the installer because of the additional machines being added to the account even without the HR44.

I have two fears at this point. 1) They won't bring the SWM16 hardware for some reason. 2) They will think my dish is too difficult to access because it is on the roof.

the installer can always call TSC and make a work order to have your HR44 installed. there might be a $49.00 for this. once your account shows that you have enough tuners to warrant a SWM16, then the tech can add it so his work order. you should not have to pay for any switches

And that is indeed a risk.

Maybe I shouldn't risk it and just call and tell them to bring everything.

They can install an SWM8 (up to 8 tuners) or SWM16 (up to 16 tuners) external SWM multiswitch without having to touch your dish. If in fact you get upgraded to include the HR44 install and you end up over 8 tuners, then there is no need to access your dish, so that risk becomes irrelevant. Normally they would replace the LNB rather than install an SWM8, and in fact the installer may not even have an SWM8 (for that reason).

If you already have 12 tuners then they'll be planning on a swm16 and they'll only need to access your dish if there are alignment issues.

I definitely have more than 8 tuners as I have 6 DVR receivers already. Even if I didn't tell them about the HR44 they should hopefully show up with a SWM16 multi. I am however having trouble receiving at least a couple of HBO channels...506 & 511...whatever that is all about. I guess I can't escape the inevitable ropes and ladder show.
