Regardless of count, this help session is still a good idea. There's no reason to not do it even if it's 2:1 in favor of the Gurus. Personally, I think that an announcement posting should be made in the Q&A forum because networking support is useful for both VOD and for MediaShare. I don't know if the discussion needs to be in Q&A or not, though.

The potential problem with that is that there ends up being an overwhelming number of folks needing help, but I would expect that there would be a lot sanity along with any chaos that may develop.

If this works out well, perhaps we could informally create a monthly help session where folks can get help on different things, not just networking. Certainly the forum is there for that purpose, but the Chat works really well for on the spot diagnosis as well. Again, if it works out, just have the session on the first Wednesday of every month. You could simply call the event "First Wednesday."

Anyway, just an extension of houskamp's great idea.

I wonder if a MOD can make this a sticky for the next two days to keep it at the top of the page and help everyone see it.

You are talking about 6 hours online with up to 16 or more people offering to help.

If we assume that we might have the main chat plus say 5 sub-chats going, that is 6 chats.

(My thought would be to break it out by software/platform instead of adapter: Mac, Windows Media Play, Twonky, Tversity, Other. Ask your gurus to commit to areas and time frames. Also ask each person coming for help to state their problems and work so far here before the chat.)

If we can help only 4 at a time in each room, that is 24 we can help at a time. If each person takes even 30 minutes, we could comfortably help over 200 people.

I say to post it in the Q & A area as well.

I will commit as well to help where I can. Looks like the network people are already signed up.

It will be interesting to see trouble shooting techniques used by others as well.

    Edit
Someone mentioned a First Wednesday or something like that....
How about a Chat-n-Learn session to cover this.

Did I miss a thread somewhere that actually said what will be required for VOD? I haven't bothered to connect my HR20 to a network because I have no need to. So I might need help for that. But I would only be doing it for VOD, and even then, I don't know if my DSL connection would even be fast enough.

It seems nearly every VOD conversation soon leads to talks of people with 5-6 meg download speeds. If thats what it will take then I guess I am out. The best I can get is about 1. And if VOD is going to be consuming all my bandwidth then its also out.

I think before a real VOD network help chat can happen, someone needs to list what would actually be needed.

At this point in time I would like to stay to just "connected to internet" problems..we will problably have other sessions later for Media Share... At that time I would think problably one sesion for each (twonky, wmp, tversity)

I'll leave it here for a couple days, then move it to its real home in the Installation forum (and likely close it friday.)

    Cheers,

I might be able to help on the Mac side if needed. I haven't used Twonky and just hooked up EyeConnect, but I'm decent on the networking side for Mac if needed.

That's a real good idea. Maybe we could come up with a list of topics and each pick one to work with over the next few months. These would also be good tests for D* chats.

I'd also like to point out to guests that visit this area. You do not need an account here @ DBSTalk to participate. If you need some help but don't want to sign up, this is your chance.
