What media player are you using? If you are using WMP11 open that up. Then right the dark colored bar at the top and then select tools, options, Library, configure sharing, and check the share my media to box. Your should have a unknown device pop up in the box below. It may take a few to pop up. Then click allow and you should see music & photos in the HR20 menu.

If you are using another medai player I am not sure because that is the only one I set up.

My post from yesterday tells my story... I have everything connected and working great including WMP11. I was wondering if I could see the HR20 on my PC...

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to organize photos for easy viewing? Right now I'm sifting thru folders and folders (which end up only having a couple of pics in each) or I have to watch ALL the photos in My Pictures folder (which is thousands)!

There is hope coming for those with problems.

The last three beta releases (CE's) are improving Media results for many.

Hang on if you are having problems.

Any rumor on actually supporting something like wireless USB adapters? (I have a couple of those laying around the house) instead of having to buy a wireless game adapter?

Nope. At this time there is no rumor of this happening. It has been suggested though. Threat of having to add a bunch of different drivers to support many different types is the argument as to why it has not been done.

A wireless game adapter is a good alternative though.

I was able to set up my HR20-100 w/ the linksys router and WMP 11 on Windows XP without issue, but I have the exact problem that is posted. After searching around on the forum I see some other people have similar issues w/ photo quality, but I couldn't find any posts about possible causes or remedies. There aren't any settings in WMP that look like would have any effect and I tried every possible screen resolution combination again to no effect. Has anyone figure out how to fix this?

    HR20 Networking - Video and/or replacing phone?

First, thanks to all for these posts. We're all wired with CAT-5 and so it was a snap to get the HR20 connected to the home router and I downloaded WMP11 for my XP machine with no problems - now I can see photos and hear MP3s.

Two questions I'm not sure were answered having gone through the posts...
    1. Any news on when we'll be able to play MPG files from WMP11 to the HR20?
    2. Do I still need the phone line connected for my HR20 for PPV, etc?

Thanks to all for your contributions.

I am not sure about your first question. But for you second question you will need a phone line connected if you would like to order PPV from the remote. You can order them online or by phone without a phone line connected. I am not sure if DIRECTV will ever add it to where you can order them with the remote if you are network. You will need the phone connected if you would like to use CID. I also believe you need to have it connected for the game lounge but I am not sure about that.

I play MPG's through WMP11 all of the time. Lots of people do. Have you tried the instructions here:

Under the 17e I can no longer play Music using Twonky Media- there is now an "x" in front of all the songs ---on Media player it is OK - a check mark.
Pictures are OK on twonky but not on Media Player.

    Can anyone help to resolve.

thanks to all for posting some great stuff.

i hooked up mp11 originally without any problems whatsover...got the library sharing, saw the device, saw my folders, etc etc.

however i did (and continue to) experience problems with the server "dropping out" after only a few songs.

does anyone know where i can find help with this issue? i've seen in around other threads but have yet been unable to find a resolution.

    thanks.

Hmmm.... I didn't think video was supported? I thought you could only view pics and listen to music.

At this point only music and photo's are supported with media share. At some point probably later this year DIRECTV will add in support for video with media share.

I finally got my HR20 to show up as an unknown device on WMP11. I wasn't getting anything to show up after I checked the media share box and clicked ok.Than I used boilerjt's post and used the xbox link to "start" the "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Services".Than I got the 1068 error and had to make sure the other two services were started and it that was it,my HR20 showed up.Thanks boilerjt for that thread. You saved me alot of time.I suggest everyone who is still having a problem with WMP11 to make sure you follow the link to the xbox forums and give those directions a try.It worked for me.

I used a WGA54G for the HR20 and was able to connect to the network and internet. Still, WMP 11 would just hang for about 20 seconds when I clicked on the Ok button after clicking the "Share my media" checkbox under Tools->Options->Library->Configure Sharing and just come back to the dialog without ever going to the next screen or showing the HR20.

Basically, you just need to enable and start the 'SSDP Discovery Service' if it is disabled. Then, enable and start the ''Universal Plug and Play Device Host' service if it is disabled.

After doing the above, WMP found the HR20 as an Unknown device, and then the music/picture sharing worked fine on the HR20.

This post is a little bit delayed, but a couple pages ago (on page 8), I had made couple of posts regarding some problems I had connecting my HR20-100 to my router. In the end, I was never able to get it to work (I had tried everything under the sun). And then, one day (just before I got the white GUI), it started working. On it's own. I didn't do anything I hadn't already tried. So if anybody is having any problems like I had...well, I don't know what I did to fix it. I know that's not much help. But I learned a lot about networking along the way and I figured I should post a follow up just say that it works now. Now, if only I could somehow make the Media Share work like I want it to...

OK, I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong. I can access Music and Photos on my HR20-700 and on my PS3. Both are connected via a Linksys router, a Linksys Home Plug AV set up and a Linksys 4 port switch. Each shows up as an unknown device in Windows Media 11. Thanks Milominderbinder2, for all the great help documentation.

I just received my new HR20-100. This unit is hard wired to the router and shows connected to both the network and the internet. But… I cannot seem to get Windows Media 11 to recognize a third “unknown device” and thus no Music and Photos on the HR20-100 menu. Is there any way to force XP and WM11 to scan for a new media device?

Yes, I did everything in the instructions, and WMP still won't find it. My HR20 says it is connected to the network and internet, and my router sees the HR20. What gives?
