And some of us see it as a total waste of space and want something else instead. There are only so many hours of Olympic coverage and they are only new every 4 years, so that is a LOT of reruns. The same is true about the addition of religious and shopping channels, there are those that welcome their additions and others that see them as crapping up the airwaves.

From what I have heard, all NBC affiliates are being strong-armed into carrying this channel (my local one hasn't added it, yet, opting for a local weather and THIS network, so far), but a lot are resisting it as they see a very limited audience for it due to lack of content. As to its ever being shown in HD, I doubt you will see that happen, ever, as its made as a sub-channel by NBC and not many affiliates are going to drop their NBC line-up (as sad as it is) in HD in favor of reruns of old Olympic competition. That is way too much of a niche channel for locals to have OTA, IMO.

Do you seriously not know that Olympic sports are competed all the time, not just in Olympic years? That's the point of Universal Sports ... To give coverage to those sports OUTSIDE Olympic years. There are thousands of Olympic sports competitions, all over the globe, to cover. Right now, Universal offers about 2,500 hours of unique, exclusive coverage of those events, not available anywhere else. (That was in their debut year and they'll have over 3,000 in 2009.) Yes, they have re-runs (granted, maybe more than most), but the more subscribers they have, the more money they'll have to produce more original programming (that's how it works). I'd also say there's more demand for watching Olympic sports over again, than there is for say, football or basketball, where the end result is a well-known-in-advance score, not a performance.

Universal has said they are working on an HD channel (not too hard, since most of their source material is already in HD). I'm sure having a full-time national distributor, and not just sub-channel access, would encourage that process.

As for "strongarming" local channels into carriage. Only 38 markets, out of 210, currently offer Universal Sports as a sub-channel. Ten of those are O&O (owned and operated by NBC Universal) NBC stations (so whom are they forcing, themselves?) and 10 others are not NBC affiliates at all. That leaves only 18 others, so if they're "strongarming" NBC stations, they're not doing it very well.

To you, Universal Sports may be a "total waste of space," but I'm sure lots of people feel that way about a channel you love/want too. It's all a matter of preference and DirecTV attracts the largest audience by trying to appeal to a wide variety of tastes, not just yours (or mine).

Those are NOT Olympic games, they are meets that nobody really cares about. :D The AAU, et. al. meets are held all over all the time, but so are tiddly-wink and poker tournaments, and I don't want to see them or have a channel dedicated to them either. Dropping VS and picking up a channel like that in its place is a JOKE. VS had contracts for popular sports and conferences and live coverage. Does this channel have any of that? Nope, they don't.

Because nobody wants to see them. :)

More than most reruns? 1st you say that they have all this prime programming and now you are saying they are all reruns, which is it? Its all reruns, have seen their schedule.

That is what every failed niche channel has said. The only reason that most of them are on the air now is that they were started when the cable and satellite companies were starving for channels. Others were started by companies that already had agreements on channels and they were given to be distributed so they could sell ads. Some, such as the NYT News Discovery Channel still failed. NBCU's track record sucks, so they will be hard pressed to do well with anything new. (Note: The cable channels they have that are successful and profitable were not started by them, they bought them.)

NBC cannot force the channels to do anything as weak as they are. The affiliates will leave them if they do and pick up FOX, ABC, CW, or MyNetwork. :) When you are sucking tailwind, you are in no position to demand.

While that is true, just adding any channel that will draw 10 viewers is not in the best interest of D*, either. Why? They have established channels that they are not carrying in HD that have wide followings and I feel sure that there are more people who want VS back or the Travel Channel long before the "Olympics of Reruns" channel.

If they want to add this channel in HD, or even 25 more like it, I could care less, as long as they have added all the current channels in HD first. That should put them on schedule in about 20 years, given the progress of D* in the past 2 years. (Hint: Count the new HD channels (non-PPV) added in past 2 years. Not many, is there?)

So basically if MIKE0616 doesn't want to watch it, no one else should be able to watch it at all? :nono2:

Did anyone ever stop to think that maybe there is the slightest possibility that the addition of Universal Sports had absolutely nothing at all to do with dropping Versus?

A lot of the negative comments ridiculing Universal Sports as a re-run channel ignore the fact that they provided the only TV coverage of two of the biggest bicycle races of the year, the Giro and Vuelta. DirecTV needs to have this channel in it's line-up, with (preferably) or without Versus.

I don't get all the hatrid for US, I am happy D* added it even if it's for a month. There had been a lot of people asking for it, no matter what some people wish to think. Don't get me wrong I do love the big 3 sports. But, you only need to look around on a wknd in the summer see how many kids are on a swim team. Hit a mtn in the winter to see how many people are skiing and snowboarding. Drive around on a wknd to see how many people are riding bikes or mtn biking. That's what this channel caters to. I have watched many swim meets; this past winter I enjoyed watching a lot of the downhill ski season and witner snowboard tour. So before you bash the channel look at how many events are actually live on it. Plus, as I said before any channel that wants to give me more Natalie Coughlin, Gretchen Bleilier, Lindsay Vonn, and Torah Bright I am all for.

I really like the channel. These sports appeal to me. If it were in HD I'd be totally in.

So where do you see where I made such a statement? Nowhere have I ever stated that a channel should be removed because I want something else.

Last I knew the Olympics were every 2 years - beginning with the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Olympics. The most recent Olympic Games was the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and the next will be the 2010 Winter Games in Vancouver. But maybe that has changed back to every 4 years.

You are both right (it IS a floor wax AND a dessert topping!) Both the winter Olympics and the summer Olympics are held every four years, but where they used to be held the same year, the winter Olympics were "slid" to being two years after (or is it before?) the summer Olympics so as to help cash-strapped national Olympic organizations from going through a feast-or-famine situation every four years.
