I thought BBCHD went live close to a year ago. Kind of a bummer for all of the people hoping for this channel. A year sounds like plenty of time to work the details. Not saying it’s DIRECTV’s fault. To be honest, I don’t know anything about BBCHD. All I know is there are people out there waiting close to a year. Believe me, I know what it’s like to wait a year (or two) for a channel. ;)

I hope Alan Gordon gets his channel soon!

The issues I have with PPV have nothing to really do with the PPV idea itself.

In fact, when used, its convenient and cheaper than running to the local Blockbuster. The concept and way its set up is quite good actually.

However...the challenge I have with using it is that I've either seent the flick before or even more formidable....there just are not that many good new flicks to see, let alone pay to see for an additional fee.

Some may agree or disagree on that last point...but that is what drives viewing...and with the viewers in this household...that's the assessment.

As not to hijack this thread, even in its last few moments of life...there's a thread on that last point...

Now that the new PPV's are launched...the next batch (likely a shorter list)...will hopefully be more National HD.

For the record, I never said I thought it would be in August.

I would ordinarily place my bets on August, but given that the new season of "Mad Men" starts up next month, I'd give it a 50%-50% chance of coming next month. Of course, DirecTV could intentionally wait until a few episodes has aired... hoping AMC might be more accommodating. ;)

Though not as big of a program, BBC's "Being Human" has a season premiere on the 24th (or is that 25th?) of next month, and given that DirecTV is airing repeats of Season One on The 101, I'd give it a somewhat decent chance...

Of course, someone from DirecTV is probably reading this... thinking "Let's show him, we'll give them nothing til August"! ;)

I've had mine (depending on which TV) either composite or component.

Depends on what setting you have it on! My TiVo Series 3 is often set to letterbox on my 50-inch SDTV, but my HR20-700 is often set to 4x3 on my 20-inch Panasonic.

    Thanks! :D

If they need a spot for it, they can always replace channel 277! ;) :D

One would think a year would be enough--but it's not. :)

Remember how many channels have gone up in the past year--they all need negotiation, sometimes as groups, sometimes one by one.

And if the SD version is in the middle of 3 or 5 year contract, it might be tricky to negotiate at that time. Some channels didn't even think HD 2 years ago, foolishly. :)

    Cheers,
    Tom

On the other hand, if everything happens to be in August, I'm sure you'll be happy with your hopeful prediction. :)

I have no information, by the way, about dates. I know DIRECTV wants to add more, is working toward more, and surely will add more. Hopefully anon. :)

    Cheers,
    Tom

And every year that AMC isn't in HD I give Amazon $30 to see Mad Men in HD instead of DirecTV's substandard-def (SD Lite? Not sure what you call 480x480i over-compressed then "up-converted" to 1080p).

There's $30 DirecTV did NOT make.

And yet, DIRECTV would not have made that $30 if they gave you AMCHD either. You still seem to be a customer in spite of this disappointment. Not to be rude, but what exactly did DIRECTV lose in this transaction? Nothing.

You gave $30 more to Amazon than you would have otherwise, but that has no bearing on DIRECTV whatsoever.

...I'm not following you here. Would you have just paid DirecTV an extra $30 each year under the table? I'm pretty sure you are stilling to pay DirecTV the full price for your service regardless of how much you do or do not pay Amazon. It not as if the inclusion or exclusion of AMC HD alone will increase or decrease DirecTV's rates.

Maybe if he didnt spend the $30 at amazon he wouldve gotten ppv, starz etc. with that $30 he had saved so essentially directv then loses $30+.

    Gotcha there. :D

Although PPV makes them money, each Cinema channel requires additional equipment. They have to balance out that equipment with how much they'll make, because HD playout equipment isn't cheap. And if you're only going to have a channel up for a couple months, it's probably not even worth it.

HD channel preference is just that...preference. There is no right, no wrong.

HD channel deployment is both a financial and technical process. An agreement needs to be in place that follows a negotiated pricing model that looks to benefit the viewer, content provider, and content delivery provider (DirecTV in this case) alike.

Based on all this...market statistics and ratings come into play, to determine both the return on investment, as well as prioritization for any launch.

As someone who has both welcomed and watched the HD Channel inventory grow from a handful of channels just a few years back to over 150 now, and also someone who enjoys HD viewing as much as anyone else...I can also understand that it needs to make business sense to grow this list.

Let the list continue to grow!
