If I remember correctly, Directv carried NHK several years ago but later dropped it for some reason. The same thing was true of China's CCTV-9 which was discontinued fairly recently.

    ...- .....
CLTV is owned by the Tribune company, think WGN. It isn't owned by a cable company.

That would never make sense anyway...it would be like Comcast carrying the 101. I know these other channels were created by cable companies, but they all serve a public interest. And PCN doesn't get exclusive content from cable companies. As far as I know, PCN only gets money from the various cable companies in the state to produce whatever they show (from the Pennsylvania Farm Show to products made in Pennsylvania and the History of Hersheypark and Kennywood Park). If there's any channel that should have the best shot at getting a carriage agreement, it should be PCN.

No, I had to get Dish so my wife could watch NHK. Before that we got it for free on C-band for years.

I stand corrected. After a little research, I realized that I had been seeing them in the 1990s on the Primestar system which I had prior to Directv. Directv later purchased and assimilated Primestar.

They need to create a CBC-America, like BBC-America.

You guys have got to make it clear that it's not coming soon to DirecTV. I was super excited until I read the blog. Sky News is one channel I miss the hell out of this side of the pond, and I hope DirecTV can get it. Espicially in HD. :D

Speaking of news channels, I'd like to see the Pentagon Channel added.

Another good source of English world news TV is France 24. I have been a faithful listener for many years to the English service of Radio Netherlands via shortwave radio and now via the internet but unfortunately they never developed an English TV news channel as far as I am aware. They produce a lot of excellent news and documentary programming.

I'd be happy to see the return of Newsworld International (which was killed off by Al Gore).

    IMHO,

    - CBC Newsworld. This used to be on DirecTV. It was then bought by a person we cannot mention to present his views on an issue we cannot discuss. I always thought that this channel was a natural. There are 10s of 1000s of Canadians who have retired to Florida, Nevada and Arizona. I always though that a source of news from "back home" would be appreciated, but it apparently was not. I never understood the CBC's view of the world. Stuff that happens in Nova Scotia is somehow more important to somebody in British Columbia than something that happened in Washington State. And complex trade and environment issues that are generally not even discussed in the USA are an all-consuming "crisis" and presented in start black (the USA) and white (Canada) terms.

    - CNNI. Also previously on DirecTV. Pretty lame. It did not cover "international news", it covered local news that happened in other countries. When it did cover actual international news, its view point was typical of CNN.

    - BBC News. I would welcome a source of BBC News, however, judging from the radio, this is a service in a decline. Again, a weird view of the world. Things that happen in anyplace that used to belong to England are more important than things that happen elsewhere.

    - Al Jezeria. With respect, this is "Al Quieda TV". Any network that presents messages from mass-murderers as if they are "viewpoints" should be unwelcome for distribution in any civilisized country. If a responsible news operation gets a taped rant from a mass murderer, it should, publically, destroy it without openning it, and inform the United States Marine Corps of who the courier that gave it to it was, so he can be brought to justice and perhaps "pursuaded" to tell on his contact and so on up the chain to justice. Some things are simply right and wrong. Mass murder is wrong and people who think differently are not entitled to be heard.

    - Regional state news networks. I do not think DirecTV wants to go there. It is just too much bandwidth. I think there are at least 70 of these things, I really do not know of a place that does not have one, and they are pretty much uninteresting outside their area, except to move-aways and such.

    - Sky. If I understand correctly, Sky is part of the Fox group (NEWS Corp) and part of the sharing deal is that it various versions are not available elsewhere.

    - Mainland Euro channels. Again often on DirecTV in the past. Pretty even handed, but other than the occasional glimpse, kind of uninteresting.

You can start with the ones for the 3 big DMA's and Chicago's CLTV is open to any one now.

The CBC's view is that the US media, which is available everywhere in Canada, gives Canadians plenty of US news, so they concentrate on Canada. That's why the CBC's nightly newscast is called "The National". And they do report on US news, but with a Canadian perspective. I would be surprised if they did otherwise. I often get more information on a story watching The National's Washington correspondent than I do watching the US networks.

I would trade my local CW affiliate for my regional news channel in a heartbeat. They don't go there because there is - supposedly - little interest in news.

Funny though, that Fox News is available around the world but Sky is not. I would trade my local NBC affiliate for Sky in a heartbeat. Or the Cartoon Network. Or Planet Green. Or any one of dozens of other channels.

Have you watched the channel? I provided a link to a live feed on the previous page of this thread. Like other networks, their coverage is focused on Haiti right now, but they also had a very interesting documentary a couple of days ago on drug addiction in Gaza. It's a well-produced channel, it's just unfortunate that it's automatically associated with terrorists. Their production studio is in DC. Here's some info: http://iwantaje.com/ (read the Hits & Myths page).

Presenting taped messages from terrorists often gets you associated with terrorists. Odd how that works.

This is hardly international, but News 12 New Jersey is in HD. DirecTV doesn't even have it in SD. Living in NJ, I'd love to have it. Is it a cable-only channel like NY1?
