I can't for the life of me understand why Directv can't or won't pick up TSN or Sportsnet's HD feeds of these Canadian games for CI, there all in HD in Canada by the way.

What they can and can't broadcast is determined by their contract with CI (NHL). It is my understanding that the feeds are sent to them from the NHL Center, in Toronto.

NHL may determine the feeds but the NHLCI package is different depending on your provider. For example, DishNetwork has less HD but has more dual feeds.

Correct, each provider has a different contract.

DTV had issues with Altitude 2 or 3 seasons back, Altitude games were not in NHLCI during that time.

Questions for the people here who continually say that DTV "CAN'T" use Canadian HD feed.

    (1) Are they allowed to use Canadian SD feeds?
    (2) Are they allowed to use CSN Philly HD feeds in CI?

IE, is the NHL stopping them from using them like you say they are stopping them from using CDN HD currently?

It is not only DTV but Dish and MOST cable except Indemand can not get CDN HD.
I have never heard any reason for this problem but that is the way it is.
I really don't understand why in the world we all keep beating this dead horse
of CDN HD and MSG HD on CI there is nothing that DTV DISH and cable can do about either of these problems.

I think the issue here is the cheapness and idiocy of the NHL. They are certainly allowed to use Canadian SD feeds since we see them all the time. I would guess you typoed and meant Canadian HD feeds, feeds like TSN HD have been on the EI package so it's certainly possible they could use them. They can use CSN Philadelphia HD feeds, I remember seeing at least one of these last year for a Flyers at Canucks game. This adds up to the fact that the NHL is too cheap to provide these feeds to D* because it's obviously possible.
If anyone knows for sure how this process works, I would love to hear it but from what I have seen, I think that the non-RSN feeds included with sports packages (OTA, Canadian, etc.) have to come from the league itself at the league's own expense. For NHL CI at least, even RSN HD feeds have to be separately negotiated for inclusion. This would also explain the poor quality of Canadian PPV feeds the last couple of years, apparently the NHL is only springing for internet transmission of those.

Its possible that its all about money. I'm sure the cable and satellite providers or the NHL must pay the networks for the feeds in the package. The Canadian networks and MSG may want too much money for their HD feeds.

Which is why the NHL needs to stop chasing the golden goose of US TV, admit that it is a regional game and do what they can when they can without all of this drama. Versus obviously does bring in enough money to satisfy DTV's need and the NHL obviously can't afford to do proper package of HD CI with every available game that carriers can afford to carry at a reasonable price.

So basically, on DirecTV here is what we are up against for NHL Center Ice:

    No Canadian broadcasts in HD
    No MSG broadcasts in HD
    No Versus at all

Every system has their flaws but no one system really has it all which is disappointing.

And as I recently learned, no US feeds on the nights that VS has exclusive games. I just keep telling myself, remember what it was like before NHL CI was available.

So wait a sec... if Versus has a game on a night, that means no other games will be broadcast on Center Ice?

It seems to be Tuesday nights now and later in the year it will be Monday nights. Probably after MNF is over.

No, you can get a game that has a Canadian team playing and its the blurry Canadian SD feed. It appears that most games with 2 US teams aren't scheduled that night. When they are, its seems to be a non-televised game, radio only.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that its only during the time that the VS game is on. The late games can be shown. And it might have been the same on Monday this past week. If you check the NHL schedule, the Tampa game wasn't televised on Tuesday. If you check on Tuesdays for the rest of October, that rule seems to hold true [Link].
