My husband often needs to record PBS programs for viewing in classes he teaches. Our old Directv Dvr's had S-video output so that gave a relatively decent picture from our DVD recorder.

Unfortunately, the Hopper has no such output. Are my only options the composite outputs?

I doubt there is any reasonably priced DVD recorder with component inputs.

    Any ideas?

I'm guessing the rca jack (composite) isn't good enough?

I use the composite. DVDs look great.

Most newer DVD players upscale to 1080 anyway and DVD isn't high def on its own.

Yep that would work, could also use S-video out from the PC used to record to record using the DVD recorder. Then again could just burn the DVD with the PC.
